Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The 2000 Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team returned to SCSU to celebrate their 15 year anniversary of winning the Northeast-10 regular season title and making it to the NCAA Tournament on Saturday evening.
They were unable to see the current team pick up a victory however, as this year's Owls fell to Southern New Hampshire 1-0 in overtime in their home opener.
The Owls fall to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen move to 4-1 and 2-1 in the NE-10.
Out of the Owls' seven shots on goal, the majority of them were taken from distance. Their best chance came in the 88th minute when
Betti Worth (Bolton, England) nearly headed in her first goal of the year off a cross. Her shot went just high of the net and forced both teams into overtime.
The Owls and Penmen made it through the first overtime without scoring, but in the 108th minute, SNHU's Rene Hamel's long shot was saved by
Erica Ridella (Warwick, N.Y.). Ridella passed the ball out to one of her defenders, but it was taken away by Alexa Poulin of the Penmen, who quickly shot it to Ridella's right and scored her first goal of the year. Ridella made five saves on the night.
Southern Connecticut controlled the tempo for much of the game but was unable to score on Southern New Hampshire's back line and goalkeeper Paige Salmon, who made seven saves in the win.
Kieran DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) led the way for the Owls with three shots on goal, while four other players added one each, including
Victoria Conde (Madrid, Spain) and
Caroline Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y.), who lead the team in goals.
Up next for the Owls is Pace University. SCSU will travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, September 22.
