Men's Soccer Takes on Rivals New Haven and Franklin Pierce This Week

Men's soccer plays an away game at New Haven and a home game against Franklin Pierce this week.

THIS PAST WEEK
Southern Connecticut lost two close road games last week to Bridgeport and Saint Michael's. Bridgeport's Jay Abreu scored on one goal and assisted the other in the earlier game, while Colby Ajoku of Saint Michael's scored off a free kick in the 95th minute in the later game. In those two games, the Owls managed just five shots on goal conpared to 11 by their opponents. Reigning NE-10 Rookie of the Year Chae Brangman did not record a shot against Saint Michael's despite playing the entire game.

THIS WEEK
Southern Connecticut hits the road to take on rival New Haven on Wednesday before returning home for their second home game this year against Franklin Pierce.

SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
The Chargers will enter Wednesday's matchup with a 3-3 record having lost their last three games, two of them to conference opponents Adelphi and Merrimack, by a combined score of 8-1. The combined records of the teams they've beaten is 2-12. George Tighe, Oscar Johannesson and Rob Poirier lead the scoring for New Haven with two goals each, while two other players have one goal each. They are scoring 1.33 goals per game and allowing 1.5 goals per game - but they have only scored one goal in their last three games.

ALL-TIME vs. NEW HAVEN
The Owls are 36-10-3 all-time against New Haven, including wins in their last 14 games.

SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
As on Monday, the Ravens have a record of 3-2. They won three straight after losing their opener, but that streak ended after losing to Stonehill this past weekend. The only common opponent thus far for Franklin Pierce and Southern Connecticut is Saint Michael's, whom FPU beat 4-0 and the Owls lost to 1-0 in overtime. The Ravens are currently averaging 2.6 goals per game and allowing just over one.Marius Preber has scored four goals this year, good for second in the conference. Goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader has made 24 saves on the year and has saved 80-percent of shots faced, good for fifth in the conference.

ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE
The Owls are 20-11-6 all-time against the Ravens, including two back-to-back matchups last year. Franklin Pierce won the final game of the regular season 2-1 to set up a rematch in the first round in the NE-10 Tournament in the following week. Southern Connecticut won that game 5-0.

WINNING THE HOME OPENER
The Owls took their home opener from Le Moyne on Saturday, September 12 with goals by Chae Brangman and Louis Greenway-Tambini. They came within three minutes of each other and sent the Dolphins back home to Syracuse with a loss. This is the third straight time Southern Connecticut has beaten Le Moyne and the Owls improve their overall record against the Dolphins to 17-4-1. 

PICKING UP THE SLACK
Last year's co-leading goal scorer Markus Jacobsen is redshirting this year after holding a tie in goals last year with Chae Brangman. Filling in for him at the forward spot has been a combination of Brangman, Louis Greenway-Tambini, and Sabri Akter. Brangman and Greenway-Tambini have scored all three goals for the Owls this season.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
As of September 8, Southern Connecticut has fallen out of the NSCAA Coaches' Rankings after beginning the season in the No. 16 slot. The new rankings are released every Tuesday.

THE PRESEASON NE-10 COACHES POLL
SCSU was picked second in the NE-10 preseason coaches poll.  The Owls received 154 points and one first place vote out of 14.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
The Owls finished 2014 with a 15-5 record and a No. 17 national ranking in the NSCAA poll. SCSU reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and before that, qualified for the finals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls averaged just over two goals per game, with Daquan King and Markus Jacobsenleading the team with 10 goals each. Defense was the Owls' strength. Led by NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year Sebastian Brems, they allowed 1.16 goals per game. Freshman keeper Noah Varonier was a stud in net for the Owls, saving 71-percent of the shots he faced.

THE CAPTAIN
Head coach Tom Lang announced that redshirt senior Tyler Naef will captain the Owls this fall. This will mark the second straight year that Naef will serve as a team captain.

SCORING PUNCH COMING BACK
Southern Connecticut will see two of its top five scorers from last season return - Markus Jacobsen and Chae Brangman. Brangman finished second on the team last year with six goals. The next highest returning scorers are Brandon Rowlinson and Ignacio Navarro, who each scored two goals last year.

2014 ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMERS
Seven players from the 2014 team were named to the All-Conference Team:
• Sebastian Brems was named First-Team All-Conference and NE-10 Defender of the year.
• Daquan King and Mads Larsen were named Second-Team All-Conference.
• Chae Brangman, Jonas Folstad, and Markus Jacobsen were named Third-Team All-Conference.
• Brangman and Noah Varonier were named to the All-Rookie Team.
• Brangman was also named Rookie of the Year.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome 14 newcomers to the squad for the 2015 season, including freshmen Ansbito Basquin, Jose Canahui, Weens Simon, Seth Dasher, Daniel Silva,Alejandro Rivera, Dylan Hogan, Alex Brown, and Daniel Prendergast. The Owls also welcome transfers Louis Greenway-Tambini, Sean Black, Alain Laurent, Mitchel White and Joe Lucas Santos.

IN SEASON OPENERS 
The Owls are 31-9-6 in season openers.

LOOKING BACK AT 2014
The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team was ranked as high as No. 1 in the region and No. 5 in the nation in 2014.

TRIO NAMED ALL-ECAC/QUARTET ALL-REGION
Sebastian Brems, Daquan King, and Mads Larsen were named All-ECAC for their efforts on the pitch during the 2014 season. Brems, Markus Jacobsen, Jonas Folstad, and Chae Brangman were named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division II All-East Region Team.

ON DECK
Following this week's games, the Owls travel to American International on Tuesday, September 29 at 7 p.m., and return home to play Saint Anselm on Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m.
