Volleyball Gets Ready for Four Matches in Week Ahead

The Owls resume Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday evening against Assumption College.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team looks to snap a six-game losing streak as  the Owls resumes Northeast-10 Conference play at Assumption College on Tuesday evening and host the College of Saint Rose on Friday evening. The Owls will then wrap up the week with a road double-header against Bloomfield College and Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon.

TEAM RECORDS
-Assumption  is  3-6 on the season and is entering Tuesday's game on a two-game winning streak. The Greyhounds will open Northeast-10 Conference (0-0) play against the Owls while the Owls resume conference (0-1) action.
-Saint Rose is 3-5 on the season and will travel to Le Moyne College for its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Tuesday evening. Before Tuesday's game, the Golden Knights have lost their last two games against Daemon and Clarion.
-Chestnut Hill is 2-10 on the season and will play Wilmington University and Bloomfield College before taking on the Owls on Saturday afternoon.
-Bloomfield College is 7-1 on the season and defeated Southern Connecticut earlier this season with a 3-0 victory back on Sept. 12.

ALL-TIME VS. ASSUMPTION
The Owls lead the all-time series against the Greyhounds 9-5.

ALL-TIME VS. SAINT ROSE
The Golden Knights hold a 8-5 edge over the Owls in the all-time series.

ALL-TIME VS. CHESTNUT HILL
This will be the first time in program history the Owls will be taking on the Griffins.

ALL-TIME VS. BLOOMFIELD
The Owls lead the all-time series against the Bears 7-1. 

LAST WEEK
In week three, Southern Connecticut went 0-3 overall and 0-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Owls are now 2-9 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. The Owls fell to conference foe Pace University, 3-0, on Wednesday before dropping a pair of matches to Caldwell, 3-1, and Philadelphia University, 3-1 , on Saturday. 

A PAIR OF DOUBLE-DOUBLES
For the third week in a row, freshman Leanna Jadus recorded two career double-doubles against Caldwell and Philadelphia University. She recorded 14 kills and 10 digs against Philadelphia and posted 11 kills and 15 digs against Caldwell. Jadus now leads the team in double-doubles with six.

JADUS WITH THE ACE
After recording a team-high five service aces last week, freshman Leanna Jadus currently ranks third in the Northeast-10 Conference averaging 0.53 service aces a game.

FORD LEADS THE DEFENSE
Last week, junior Faith Ford led the Owls defense in blocks with 10 block assists. She recorded two block assists against the Setters and four block assists against the Rams and Cougars. Ford is currently tied in second, along with Alexandria Jurgens, with 20 total blocks on the season.

TEAM STAT BREAK-DOWN
-The Owls are averaging 11.09 kills per set while posting a hitting percentage of .165. 
- Southern Connecticut's defense is fifth in the conference in block assists (112) and block total (71) as well as ranks fourth in blocks per set (1.73 bps)
- This season the Owls are 0-5 in three-set matches, 1-3 in four-set matches and 1-1 in five-set matches.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR
Southern Connecticut finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 7-22 and a conference record of 3-11.

O'CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
For the second year in a row, seniors Morgan Carman and Kelly Gunneson will serve as team captains for the Owls this fall.

RETURNING TO THE COURT
The Owls have 13 student-athletes returning from last year's team, including Morgan Carman, Jasmin Barrett, Taylor Carlson, Kelly Gunneson, Sean Taylor, Alexandra Nimz, Carly Balskus, Alexandria Jurgens, Taylor Flowers, Faith Ford, Briauna Tutwiler, Haley Samuelson and Taylor MacDowell.

OWLS WELCOME FIVE NEWCOMERS
The Owls welcome five student-athletes to the team this year: Bridgette Walsh, Jennifer Dawson, Leanna Jadus, Jessica Schmitz and Janae Owen.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL
Southern Connecticut was selected 12th in the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches.

GUNNESON AND HAUSER EARN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Kelly Gunneson and Nicole Hauser were two out of 37 SCSU student-athletes that were named to the Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement award for the 2014-15 academic year. The student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year.

GUNNESON INDUCTED INTO NATIONAL MATH HONOR SOCIETY
Last fall, Kelly Gunneson was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the National Math Honor Society.

GUNNESON NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Senior Kelly Gunneson was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team for her work in the classroom and on the court last fall. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.

ON DECK
The Owls wrap up the month of September with a home volleyball match against cross-town rival the Univ. of New Haven. The match is scheduled for Sept. 29th at 7 p.m. from Pelz Gymnasium.
