Volleyball Falls to Chestnut Hill and Bloomfield

Volleyball drops a pair of matches to Chestnut Hill and Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon.

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to Chestnut Hill College and Bloomfield College on Saturday afternoon. The Owls drop to 2-13 on the season and remain at 0-3 in conference play.

Match 1 vs. Chestnut Hill: Chestnut Hill 3 | So. Conn. St. 0
Set Scores: (1) 25-17 (CHC), (2) 28-26 (CHC) and (3) 25-22 (CHC)

Chestnut Hill took control early opening the set on a 6-1 run before pushing ahead, 16-12, before an Owls' timeout. Following the short break, Chestnut Hill extended its lead to eight, 20-12, before securing set one 25-17.

Southern Connecticut rallied together an early 3-1 lead over Chestnut Hill to start off the next set. Southern Connecticut kept its lead for the majority of the frame until Chestnut Hill took a 21-20 lead off an attack error by Faith Ford (New Britain, Conn.). Both teams traded points and tied the match at 25-25, sending the set into extra points. Southern Connecticut mamaged to tie the set at 26-26 on a kill from Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.), but Chestnut Hill claimed the second set, 28-26.

Similar to set two, Southern Connecticut grabbed an early 5-1 lead, before the match was tied up at 9-all. Chestnut Hill won the rally and pushed ahead 18-17 until Southern Connecticut tied the match at 19-19. However, the Owls couldn't pick up the win as Chestnut Hill won the final set and match 25-22.

Jurgens led the Owls in the first game with a team-high nine kills and eight digs. Sophomore Alexandra Nimz (Littleton, Colo.) chipped in with 28 assists, three kills, a service ace, four digs and a block. Senior Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) posted 13 digs while sophomore Sean Taylor (Kent, Wash.) tallied a team-high three blocks.

Match 2 vs. Bloomfield: Bloomfield 3 | So. Conn. St. 0
Set Scores: (1) 25-23 (BC), (2) 25-21 (BC) and (3) 25-18 (BC)

Bloomfield opened match two with a 9-6 lead over Southern Connecticut, before the Owls came back and tied the match at 16-all after a kill from Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.). However, Bloomfield went on a 5-3 run to extend its lead to two, 21-19. Southern Connecticut battled to within one, 22-21, but fell in set one 25-23.

The second set began with Southern Connecticut taking an early 4-0 lead before pushing ahead with a 7-4 lead over the hosts. With the scored tied at 16-16, Bloomfield regained its lead 19-17, but an attack error by the hosts tied the frame at 21-21. Bloomfield ended the set on a 4-0 run and brought the match score to 2-0 heading into the next set.

It was all Bloomfield in the third and final set as the hosts jumped out to a 18-12 lead over the Owls. Bloomfield continued to extend its lead and ended the game with a 25-18 third set victory over the Owls.

Jadus led the Owls in match two with a team-high eight kills, eight digs and a block while Jurgens chipped in with seven kills, six assists, three service aces, seven digs and three blocks. Nimz registered 21 assists and six digs for the Owls.

The Owls are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 29th as the team welcomes cross-town rival New Haven to Pelz Gymnasium for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. Game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
