View Notes as a PDFSTARTING THE SEASON AT .500The No. 16 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team begins the season 1-1 after splitting their two games during the opening weekend. They picked up the win against Dominican off a Louis Greenway-Tambini score, which came off a scramble for the ball.
Noah Varonier made four saves in the win. The Owls dropped the following game 3-0 to No. 11 LIU-Post, a game in which the entire team did not play as well. Varonier made three saves in the match, but mishandled a shot which led to the third goal of the game.
DROPPING OUTAfter starting the season 1-1, the Owls have fallen out of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings. They were previously ranked No. 16 and lost to No. 11 LIU-Post, which is now ranked No. 15. Eight teams that were not in the top 25 in the preseason have moved up into the top 25 in the week 1 poll.
LACK OF OFFENSIVE OUTPUTThe Owls scored one goal in the opening two games this season after scoring five goals in the first two games last season. Four of the six players who took the most shots last year are no longer on the team, and the remaining two players,
Chae Brangman and
Markus Jacobsen, have combined for two shots in the first two games. Southern Connecticut will look for returning sophomore
Sabri Akter, who started the first two games this year, and newcomer Louis Greenway-Tambini, who has the only goal for the Owls on the young season, in particular to pick up the slack.
SCOUTING LE MOYNEThe Owls play just one game this week, a home matchup against Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins were ranked fifth in the NE-10 preseason poll and enter this week with a record of 2-0, having beaten Lock Haven University and Mercy College. Le Moyne's keeper, Ben Beaury, has not allowed a goal in those two games, turning away nine shots. Southern Connecticut has one goal and seven shots on goal in two games.
ALL-TIME VS. LE MOYNEThe Owls lead the all-time series against the Dolphins with a record of 16-4-1. The Owls defeated Le Moyne last year 2-1 thanks to two goals from graduate
Daniel Ruiz.
