Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team swept a pair of games against Saint Michael's on Monday by final scores of 8-7 and 12-2. The Owls finish their Spring Trip in Florida with a record of 4-5.Â
With the wins, the Owls improve to 4-7 overall while the Purple Knights fall to 0-8.
In game one, Southern Connecticut got out of the gates quickly with two runs scored in the bottom of the first inning.
Arianna Medeiros (Tewksbury, Mass.),
Catherine Ursillo (Bergenfield, N.J.) and
Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) all singled to start the inning, and
Victoria Ceballos (Bridgeport, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, scoring Medeiros.
Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) then hit a sacrifice fly to score Ursillo to make it 2-0, Southern.
Saint Michael's got both runs back in the top of the second, but the Owls responded in the bottom half of the inning when D'Arcangelo smacked her second home run of the year, a grand slam, to left-center field to give SCSU a 6-2 lead.Â
D'Arcangelo added another run to Southern's total in the fourth inning. She led off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on Ceballos' sacrifice bunt and fielder's choice.Â
SMC began its rally in the next half inning, making up a five run deficit in the top of the fifth to tie the game at seven. In the bottom half of the inning, the bases were loaded with two outs for the Owls when Ceballos brought
BryAnna McIntosh (Cheshire, Conn.) home on a single to center field. Medeiros tried to score from second on the play and was thrown out at home, but the damage was done with Southern Connecticut leading 8-7.Â
Ceballos pitched the final 2.2 innings for the Owls and picked up her second win of the year. She struck out three Purple Knights during her stint on the mound.
Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) started the game for Southern. She pitched 4.1 innings and struck out six.Â
The Owls' offense was rolling in game two. Southern hit a double, two triples and a home run on its way to 11 hits and a 12-2 win. The starting pitcher,
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.), started off the scoring in the first inning with a two RBI single, plating D'Arcangelo and Medeiros.
Danielle Piazza (Hopewell Jct, N.Y.) came around to score on a
Lauren Yaffa (Manchester, Conn.) groundout to make it 3-0 Southern.Â
The Owls continued the scoring in the second and third innings. They picked up one run in the second off on an error by SMC's Christina Brazeau and two more in the third on a McIntosh triple, her second of the year, which scored
Arianne Tedeschi (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Franco.Â
After the Purple Knights manufactured two runs in the fourth, Piazza hit her first home run of the year in the sixth inning down the left field line, scoring D'Arcangelo and making the score 8-2. Southern tacked on four more runs in the seventh with a
Holly Noe (Groton, Conn.) bases-clearing double and a D'Arcangelo triple, her second of the year, which scored Noe.Â
Cockrill pitched a complete game and gave up just four hits and two earned runs while striking out 11 batters. She picked up the win and is now 2-1 on the year.
Southern Connecticut returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Adelphi University for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
