Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team fell in its Northeast-10 Conference opener to Pace University on Friday afternoon by the score of 1-0. With the loss, the Owls fall to 6-10-1 and 0-1 while the Setters improve to 12-7 and 1-0 on the season.
Freshman
Brandon Rentas (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up the loss for the Owls as the rookie pitched a total of eight innings and allowed one run off five hits while striking and walking two batters.
Junior
Kyle Hart (North Branford, Conn.) led the Owls with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate while freshman
Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) and junior
McNeill Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) collected a hit apiece.
After a scoreless four innings, Pace broke the silence in the bottom of the fifth as Cory Capaldi began the inning with a double to left center. With runners on first and second, Frank Mayo was able to move the base runners after a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher before a sacrifice fly from Brett Bittiger allowed Capaldi to score for the Setters.
Southern Connecticut's last threat came in the top of the eighth as Criscuolo started off the inning with a double to left center. With one out, Criscuolo was able to get into scoring position as he advanced from second to third on a wild pitch. However, a strike out and a ground out to second ended the Owls' threat.
Southern Connecticut was only able to collect four hits on the afternoon against Pace's pitcher Dylan Mouzakes.
The Owls wrap up their three-game series with Pace University tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
