NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.), Danielle Piazza (Hopewell Jct, N.Y.) and Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) all hit home runs for the Southern Connecticut State University softball team in game one against Dowling on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls took game one 12-4 thanks in part to the three dingers, but fell in game two 16-5.

Southern Connecticut is now 6-13 overall, while Dowling is 6-14.

The Owls never trailed in game one. D'Arcangelo smacked the first pitch she saw off the left field foul pole for a solo shot in the top of the first. Then in the third, she brought Arianna Medeiros (Tewksbury, Mass.) home on an error and came around to score along with Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) on Dolloff's homer to make it 5-0, Southern.

Dowling picked up two runs in the fifth inning but SCSU got them right back in the bottom half when Franco and D'Arcangelo scored unearned runs off of fielding errors. After two more Golden Lion runs in the next inning, Medeiros singled to score Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4. Three batters later with the bases loaded, Piazza hit her second home run of the year to put the Owls up 12-4 and end the game on an eight-run mercy rule.

Dolloff finished as the winning pitcher. She allowed nine hits and four runs (two earned) with two strikeouts on the mound in addition to going 2-for-3 with her first home run this season in the five spot in the lineup.

Southern Connecticut kept it close in game two, but Dowling pulled away in the sixth inning. The Golden Lions picked up two unearned runs in the first inning that the Owls would get back. First, Dolloff scored in the second inning on an error by the Dowling catcher to make it 2-1. Then, Piazza scored from third base in the fourth inning on a wild pitch to tie the game at two.

Dowling retook the lead with a four run fifth inning. In the bottom half of the fifth, Piazza scored on an error by the Dowling shortstop to make it 6-3. The Golden Lions then picked up ten runs in the sixth inning that Southern Connecticut could not match. Two Owl runs crossed the plate in the bottom half of the sixth – Feerick scored on a D'Arcangelo fielder's choice and Medeiros scored on an error by the second baseman.

Southern Connecticut returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to New Haven for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
