NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team's three seniors,
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.),
Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) and
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.), guided the squad to a 6-2 win over Bridgeport on Senior Day Sunday morning. Cockrill recorded a new career high in strikeouts with 13 as she allowed just two hits and two runs to the Purple Knights. Feerick opened up the scoring in the first inning with a three RBI double and Dolloff scored an insurance run after singling in the sixth inning.
The Owls wrap up the season with an overall record of 12-27 and a conference record of 4-16. Bridgeport falls to 19-26 overall.
Cockrill's previous career high in strikeouts was 12. It came just nine days ago in a win over Saint Rose. She finishes the regular season with 125 K's in 21 appearances, tied for third most in the conference. She is also second in the conference in strikeouts per game at 7.42. Cockrill struck out the side three times against the Purple Knights on Sunday and got all the run support she needed in the first inning.
The Owls took advantage of a fielding error by Bridgeport in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Feerick came through with a two-out double to right-center field, clearing the bases to give Southern Connecticut an early 3-0 lead.
Samantha Groskritz (Granby, Conn.) scored another run in the third inning on a passed ball.
After Bridgeport picked up two runs in the fourth and sixth innings,
Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) singled home both Dolloff and Feerick to get the lead back to four, where it would end. The Owls were 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position on the day.
