Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Behind a one-hitter in game one by
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) and an offensive explosion in game two, the Southern Connecticut State University softball team swept a doubleheader against Adelphi, 2-0 in game one and 11-3 in five innings in game two, on Friday afternoon. Adelphi entered the day as the top team in the Northeast-10 Conference.
With the wins, the Owls are now 8-18 overall and 2-7 in the NE-10, while the Panthers fall to 20-13 and 10-3 in the conference.
Cockrill pitched arguably her best game of the season in the game one win. She allowed one hit and struck out five Adelphi batters en route to her second shutout victory this year.
Due to Cockrill's dominance on the mound, the Owls did not need much run support. They picked up both runs in the second inning when
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) hit a leadoff single and scored on a
Catherine Ursillo (Bergenfield, N.J.) triple. The next batter,
Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.), walked, stole second, and came around to score on a
Samantha Groskritz (Granby, Conn.) single for the second run of the game. That was all Cockrill needed, as she retired 15 of the next 18 batters she faced.
Southern Connecticut's bats came alive in game two. The Owls picked up 12 hits and 22 total bases, the most in any game this season.
Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) hit her seventh home run this year, tied for second in the conference, in the first inning. It was a three-run blast that scored
Arianna Medeiros (Tewksbury, Mass.) and
Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.). With an early 3-0 lead, SCSU stayed hot at the plate as Dolloff doubled down the left field line and scored when Ursillo hit a bunt single that was misplayed by the Adelphi infield. Ursillo stole second to get in scoring position for Feerick who doubled her home on a shot to right-center field. Then, Feerick scored the Owls' sixth and final run of the first inning on a
Victoria Ceballos (Bridgeport, Conn.) single.
The Owls tacked on four more runs in the third inning.
Holly Noe (Groton, Conn.) and Groskritz both singled to open the frame and Medeiros walked to load the bases. Franco then walked, as well, to force in
Lauren Yaffa (Manchester, Conn.), who pinch-ran for Noe. After D'Arcangelo struck out swinging, Dolloff singled in two runs as both Groskritz and Medeiros scored due to an error by the Adelphi first baseman. Franco scored during the next at-bat as the Panthers tried to throw out
Samantha Peltier (Sutton, Mass.), the pinch runner, as she stole second base.
Noe reentered the game and launched her first home run of the season in the fourth inning to left-center field to make it 11-0, Owls. The Panthers scored three runs in the fifth inning but could not get to within seven runs by the end of the fifth. Ceballos came in to pitch and got three strikeouts to end the game and secure the Owls' second conference win.
Dolloff allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits and two strikeouts. She also went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and two RBI on the day. D'Arcangelo went 3-for-6 with three RBI, a double and a home run. The Owls held Adelphi third baseman Brenna Martini to one hit in five at-bats in the doubleheader. Martini leads the NE-10 in home runs, extra base hits and total bases.
Southern Connecticut's next game is Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Owls will host American International.
