No. 22 Men's Soccer To Open NE10 Tournament Play

POSTSEASON BOUND
The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team went 1-0-1 last week with a 2-0 win over Saint Anselm and a 0-0 tie against Saint Rose. Now, for the second time in a week, the Owls will face Saint Rose on Tuesday night in the first round of the NE10 Tournament, with the game to start at 7 p.m.

THE NE10 TOURNAMENT
The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team has earned the No. 3 seed in the NE10 Tournament. The Owls (10-2-4, 8-1-4 NE10) will face Saint Rose (6-8-2, 6-5-2 NE10), the No. 6 seed, in a quarterfinal round game on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. SCSU is 18-15 all-time in the NE10 Tournament, with one title (2007) and five runner-up finishes.

IN THE NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
Southern Connecticut was No. 2 in last week's NCAA Regional rankings, the second rankings of the 2017 season. The Owls were No. 3 in the first poll and moved up a spot last week. The rankings are used to determine NCAA Tournament selection.

IN THE UNITED SOCCER COACHES NATIONAL POLL
The Owls moved up one spot to No. 22 in Division II in last week's United Soccer Coaches National poll.

OWLS JUMP TO NO. 3 IN UNITED SOCCER COACHES REGIONAL RANKINGS
The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team jump to No. 3 in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll. 

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT RELEASES NEW LOGO
In conjunction with the 2017 Homecoming Weekend festivities, the Southern Connecticut State University athletic department announced a redesign of its Owl logo, effective Oct. 21, 2017. SCSU partnered with Phoenix Design Works of Maplewood, New Jersey for the development of the new athletics logos.
 
CAREER YEAR FOR GREENWAY-TAMBINI
As the 2017 season winds down for Louis Greenway-Tambini, the senior leads his team in all statistical categories and hit career highs in assists (5), goals (12) and points (29).

VARONIER NAMED NE10 GOALIE OF THE WEEK
For the third time this year, Noah Varonier was named the NE10 Goalie of the Week, in an announcement made on Oct. 30. Varonier closed the regular season with back-to-back shutouts against Saint Rose and Saint Anselm to boost his season total to seven.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Several key players for the Owls are Louis Greenway Tambini who has 12 goals and five assists on the year, putting him at a career high 29 points, goalie Noah Varonier who has recorded 71 saves on the year and seven shutouts and James Foster who is second on the team in points so far this year.

GREENWAY-TAMBINI STAYS HOT
The senior added one goal last week to put him at 12 goals on the year. He leads his team in all statistical categories with an average of 1.8 points a game and is having the best statistical season of his collegiate career.

FOSTER SHINES FOR OWLS
Sophomore James Foster recorded a goal and an assist against Le Moyne and No. 9 Merrimack. The assist came against No. 9 Merrimack on the game-winning goal.

CEREROLS SCORES FIRST CAREER GOAL
Freshman Ignasi Cererols recorded the first collegiate goal of his career against UNH off a penalty kick to help the Owls win the game.

GREENWAY-TAMBINI EARNS NE10 WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Louis Greenway Tambini was named to the NE10 weekly honor roll after recording two goals and three assists against Bridgeport and LIU Post. 
 
OWLS START OFF ON A HIGH
With the Owls' win against Mercy, they improved to 34-9-2 all-time in season openers. Senior Louis Greenway Tambini had the game-winning goal that was assisted by Ignacio Navarro to give the Owls the first win of the 2017 campaign.

CAPTAINS EARN WEEKLY HONORS
Noah Varonier was awarded Goalie of the Week honors for his play in the Owls' home opener against Mercy. He recorded four saves in the win for his first shutout of the 2017 campaign. Louis Greenway-Tambini, meanwhile was named to the weekly honor roll after he scored the game-winning goal for the Owls in the 1-0 victory over Mercy. 
 
THE CAPTAINS
Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer coach Tom Lang has announced that senior Louis Greenway Tambini and senior Noah Varonier will serve as the team captains for the 2017 season.
                     
RETURNING OWLS
The Owls have 14 returning players from the 2016 campaign. In addition, the Owls returning field players accounted for 51 percent of the goals from last year, including six tallies from All-Conference pick Louis Greenway Tambini.

VARONIER KEY TO OWLS DEFENSE
Senior Noah Varonier started all 17 games for the Owls in his junior year. He posted a 1.44 GAA last season and is a three-year starter for the Owls.

PETKE NAMED REAL SALT LAKE HEAD COACH
Former Southern Connecticut State University All-American and 2017 SCSU Hall of Fame inductee Mike Petke was named head coach for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome nine newcomers to the 2017 squad: Noah Rattet, Sean Lyons, Sebastian Jarlenas, Kyle Falvey, Kevin Van Der Pol, Nicolas Colodrero, Jhony Gonzalez, Ignasi Cererols and Lukas Szymecki. 

LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR
The Owls finished last season at 7-8-2 record and earned a spot in the NE10 Tournament.
