Women's Soccer Travels To Assumption, Hosts SNHU This Week

The Southern Connecticut women's soccer team will resume NE10 this week when it travels to Assumption on Tuesday, Sept. 25 before hosting Southern New Hampshire at Jess Dow Field on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Owls are coming off back-to-back NE10 wins against Adelphi and Bentley last week and stand at 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play. Assumption will host the Owls with a record of 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the NE10.

THEIR LAST TIME OUT
Southern enters the week on the heels of back-to-back wins against NE10 foes Adelphi and Bentley. Southern captain Mikeala Magee scored the game-winning goal in the closing minutes of the Owls' home-opener against Adelphi on Wednesday, Sept. 18 before Allie Smith back-stopped the Owls to the tune of 10 saves in her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win against Bentley at home on Saturday, Sept. 21.

ALL-TIME AGAINST ASSUMPTION
  • Tuesday's game at Assumption will mark the 24th time that the Owls and Greyhounds have met on the pitch with the Owls holding a 14-8-2 ledger in the all-time series.
  • Southern won six-of-seven matches between 2006 and 2012 while Assumption has won four of the last six games between the two teams.
  • Last season, Southern battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to score three second-half goals en route to a 3-2 come-from-behind win at home on Sept. 22, 2018.
  • Johanna Wahlen put the Owls on the board with their first goal of the game befor Greta Brunello tied it in the 69th minute. Meaghan Kelley headed in the game winner on a cross from Kelsey Burr to seal the victory.

ALL-TIME AGAINST SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • Southern Connecticut and Southern New Hampshire have faced each other 28 times with the Owls hosting a 10-11-7 record in the all-time series.
  • The Owls posted a run of 7-1-1 in nine meetings between 2007 and 2014, while the Penmen have won five of the last six matchups, including back-to-back overtime wins in 2018 and 2017.
 
NOTES
  • Allie Smith put together an incredible week in goal to lead the Owls to a 2-0 week with wins against NE10 foes Adelphi and Bentley as Southern dealt both teams their first conference losses.
  • Against Adelphi in a 2-1 win, Smith turned back eight of the Panthers' nine shots-on-goal in Southern's come-back win. She followed that performance with her third shutout of the season that featured 10 saves against Bentley.
  • For the week, Smith posted a 0.50 GAA with one goal allowed in 180 minutes while stopping 18-of-19 shots on goal for a .947 save percentage.
  • For the season, Smith is 4-1-0 while playing every minute in goal for the Owls and hosts a 1.00 GAA with three shutouts.
  • Kaitlyn D'Amico and Rossella Graniero are currently tied for the team lead in goals with two each, having both scored in the Owls' win against Bentley on Saturday, Sept. 21.
  • D'Amico checks-in with five points on two goals and an assist for a point-per-game average. Both of her goals were game-winners.
  • Through its first five games, Southern has not allowed a first-half goal, while five of its eight goals scored have come in the first 45 minutes.
  • With her first career point coming on an assist on Graniero's goal, Julia Alicea became the eighth different Owls' player to pick up a point this season and the first freshman to get on the board.

UP NEXT
Saturday's game against Southern New Hampshire and a non-conference tilt against Queens on Wednesday, Oct. 2 mark the final two home games at Jess Dow Field before a six-game stretch of road contests for the Owls, with their next home date against New Haven on Oct. 22.
