Southern Connecticut hosts New Haven on Saturday, Nov. 12, for the Elm City Trophy at 12 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. Prior to the start of the game between the Owls and Chargers, Southern will honors its senior class for Senior Day.
 
THE MATCHUP
  • Southern enters the game with a record of 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the NE10 while New Haven is 7-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
  • The two teams played earlier this season with New Haven claiming a 31-26 victory in West Haven.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST NEW HAVEN
New Haven has won 26 of the 33 games all-time between the two teams dating back to the first game between the two teams on Oct. 31, 1981, which was a 28-28 tie at Bowen Field.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
  • Southern's Diante Wilson scored twice for the Owls, with both touchdowns coming in the closing minutes of the game.
  • Wilson finished with 87 yards on 20 carries, as well as four receptions for 42 yards.
  • Owls wide receiver Tylon Papallo had seven catches for 107 yards and one touchdown while Joe DiGello had a 50-yard interception for a touchdown, while also totaling eight tackles including a sack. 
  • Robert Nunez led Southern with nine tackles while Matt Ansell forced a fumble that he recovered. 
 
OWLS NOTES
  • Owls freshman Andreas Picarelli was named the NE10 Rookie of the Week after a booting a program-record 84-yard punt against Post last weekend.
  • Picarelli enters the weekend with 2,084 punting yards, which stands as third in the NE10.
  • He also has 13 punts inside the 20 and 15 fair catches.
  • Southern enters the game with wins in three of its last four games, defeating Franklin Pierce, American International and Post.
  • Against Post, Five different Owls scored in the win, with Anthony Ligi (Wolcott, Conn.) leading the Owls' backfield with 111 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. 
  • Shawn Martin (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Jordan Davis (Wallingford, Conn.) also had touchdown carries while Tylon Papallo (Meriden, Conn.) and Tim O'Shea (Southington, Conn.) accounted for Southern's two receiving scores. 
  • Szymon Gawlick (Newton, Mass.) converted on 3-of-5 field goal attempts and was 5-for-5 on PAT's.
  • Owls receiver Tylon Papallo ranks second in the NE10 in total receiving yards (644) and fourth in yards to per game (64.4).
  • Papallo is also second in the conference with a 16.1 yard-per-catch average and fourth with five touchdowns.
  • With NE10-leading 194 punt return yards as well, Papallo is third in the conference with 828 all-purpose yards in 10 games for a 82.8 yards per game average.
  • Diante Wilson ranks seventh in the conference with 447 rushing yards and has scored twice this season.
  • Marc Reali ranks seventh in the NE10 with 1,183 passing yards with a 131.4 per-game average. Reali has eight touchdown passes this season.
  • Shawn Martin is third in the conference with 561 kick return yards and a 21.6 yard per return average.
  • Martin is fifth in the conference with 793 all-purpose yards. Martin has 561 kick return yards, 16 punt return yards, 80 receiving yards and 137 rushing yards.
  • Szymon Gawlick ranks third in the conference with 45 points among all kickers, with eight field goals and 21 extra-points.
  • On defense, Hasan Dominick is third in the conference with 73 tackles, including eight for a loss.
  • Robert Nunez is close-behind Dominick with 71 tackles, with one sack and three tackles for a loss, with three pass breakups.
  • Joe DiGello also ranks in the top 10 in the conference with 57 tackles, while also totalling four sacks, 11 ½ for a loss and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown against New Haven. DiGello has also also forced two fumbles.
  • Ja'kai Young is fourth in the conference with a team-best three interceptions and also leads the team with five pass break-ups.
  • Matt Ansell has 44 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breaksup this seasn as well as a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
     
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
  • New Haven's offense features the conference's top passer in Connor Degenhardt, who leads the NE10 with 1,860 yards while completing 58.9% (139-236) of his passed with a conference best 25 touchdowns.
  • New Haven also features the NE10's top rusher in Christopher Ais who has compiled 837 yards at a 93 yards per game average with six touchdowns.
  • Dev Holmes had 32 receptions for 615 yards for a 19.2 yard per catch average with seven touchdown catches.
