SCSU Football Tops AIC, 10-3, In Home Opener For Joe Loth's First Win As An Owl

Southern Connecticut State University football defeated American International, 10-3, in it's home opener at Jess Dow Field. With the win, first-year head coach Joe Loth picks up his first victory as the Owls improved to 1-1. AIC dropped to 0-3 on the season.

In front of a crowd of 2,816 SCSU fans, the Owls dominated the game with strong defense and precise offense. The team's only touchdown came in the third quarter when Kieran Falzon rushed four yards into the end zone, capping off a five-play, 35-yard drive that lasted 2:45 minutes. Branden Louis' first career interception set up the drive that saw Brandon Jorgensen hook up with Divine Edwards on a 24-yard pass down the sideline in front of the Owls' bench that gave Southern the ball inside AIC"s five-yard line. Daniel Benzi added a 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, securing the Owls' lead.

Despite AIC's late-game efforts, the Owls' defense held strong, forcing the visitors to settle for a 21-yard field goal by Santana Fonseca. The Owls' offense, led by quarterback Brandon Jorgensen and running back John Amaning, controlled the tempo of the game, racking up 302 total yards.

Amaning turned in his second 100-yard effort in as many games after he rushed for 106 yards on 18 carries. Falzon added 30 yards on the ground, including his touchdown run. Jorgensen, meanwhile, threw for 151 yards, connecting with receiver Seth Westover for 35 yards.

Defensively, Shane Kanterman led the Owls for the second-straight game with 10 tackles and also broke up a pass. Dom Barbuto had eight tackles including 2.5 for a loss, and ended the game in the Yellowjackets backfield on the final play of regulation. TJ Butler had seven tackles and a break up while Branden Louis had his first interception with the Owls. Joe Garbowski led the Owls with five quarterback hurries.

Southern is back in action when it travels to Salisbury, N.C. on Saturday, Sept. 27 to take on Catawba in the first meeting between the two teams all-time. The Owls return home for Homecoming and Parents Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 2 to face Bentley at 2 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
