SCSU Gymnastics Finishes Third In Season Opener

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Southern Connecticut gymnastics opened the 2023 season with third place finish at West Chester University's tri-meet with Bridgeport. Southern's final tally of 186.225 trailed West Chester (190.975) and Bridgeport (186.675).
 
Freshman Ava Kelly (Long Beach Island, N.J.) was the Owls' top finisher in the Floor Exercise and also posted the team's third best score on the Vault. Hanna Zebdi (Ashburn, Va.) had the second-best score on the Floor and Vault. Lexi Bracher (Oakton, Va.) led Southern on the Vault while All-American Hannah Stahlbrodt (Cicero, N.Y.) had a team-leading score on the Bars. Alexa Melanson (Moncton, New Brunswick) led the Owls on the Balance Beam. ­­­­
 
Floor
  • Southern combined for a score of 47.975 in the floor exercise.
  • First-year Owl Ava Kelly (Long Beach Island, N.J.) led the Owls in the Floor event with a score of 9.650.
  • Owls standout Hanna Zebdi (Ashburn, Va.) posted a score of 9.625 while Erica Beyer (State College, Pa.) and Ava Boyd (Braintree, Mass.) rallied with scores of 9.600, each.
  • Libby Allen (Franklin, Tenn.) posted a 9.50. 
Vault
  • Southern posted a team score of 46.500 on the vault.
  • Lexi Bracher (Oakton, Va.) led the Owls with a score of 9.475 followed by Zebdi at 9.450.
  • Bracher finished sixth overall while Zebdi was close behind in seventh.
  • Kelly was third in the Owls' rotation with a 9.425 while Brianna Dorr (Hampton, N.J.) had a 9.250. 
Bars
  • Hannah Stahlbrodt (Cicero, N.Y.) returned to the Owls lineup after missing the second half of last season due to injury. The Owls' All-American posted a team-best score of 9.625 on the bars.
  • Stahlbrodt finished second overall in the event while Ciana Rios (Vineland, N.J.) was fourth overall with a score of 9.575. 
Beam
  • In the Owls' final event of the afternoon, Alexa Melanson scored a team-high 9.525 on the beam to lead Southern in the event.
  • Melanson finished eighth overall.
  • Angel Lee was second with a score of 9.475 followed by Emiley Kahl in third at 9.350. 
Up Next
Southern returns to action on Friday, Jan. 13 when it travels to University Park, Pa. to compete in a tri-meet hosted by Penn State with LIU.
