SCSU Field Hockey Drops A Heartbreaker To Adelphi, 5-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut field hockey came up short in a fierce back-and-forth battle against Adelphi, 6-4. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 5-8 overall and 4-5 in the NE10 while Adelphi improved to 6-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti and Tori Geaglone both scored twice for the Owls while Geaglone added her fifth assist of the year. Geaglone has also scored in six-straight games and has tallied a point in seven-straight and stands at 12 goals for the season.

Rodriguez Ricchiuti gave the Owls an early lead when she scored three minutes into the game. Off a corner set, Meghan Tilona fired a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked. The loose ball landed on Rodriguez Ricchiuti's stick before she spun away from the goal and fired a shot through traffic that beat the Panthers keeper.

Adelphi answered with four-straight goals to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Less than a minute into the second period, Geaglone scored off a corner. The Owls' fifth-year midfielder took the insert at the top of the circle and fired a shot on goal. Knocked down by a defender, the ball drifted to the center of the circle where Geaglone found it with space. Virtually unguarded, Geaglone bounced a shot past the Panthers' goalkeeper to cut Adelphi's lead to 4-2.

With less than four minutes to play in the quarter, Kyla Hart-Perron broke up an entry pass into the Owls defensive zone and sent the ball up field to Rodriguez Ricchiuti. Rodriguez Ricchiuti carried the ball to the top of the Panthers' circle spun halfway to the center of the field before spinning back to lose her defender. Her shot from 12 yards out found a seam and then the back of the cage as the Owls cut Adelphi's lead to 4-3. Adelphi scored again moments later to push its lead back to 5-3.

With just under 12 minutes remaining in the game, Geaglone scored her second of the game to pull the Owls within one. Geaglone was awarded a penalty shot, which she buried to make the score 5-4. Adelphi scored again to seal the victory with 42 seconds remaining.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 when they travel to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley in a NE10 matchup set for a 6 p.m. start. After they travel to Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 21, the Owls close the regular season at home against Pace on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
