SCSU Football Wins Five OT Thriller At Pace, 25-23

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut football won a five-overtime thriller at Pace, 25-23, to improve to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the NE10 while the Setters dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.



E'lijah Gray led the Owls' offense with 182 total yards and and two touchdowns while Tylon Papallo had 71 yards receiving a touchdown and the game-winning conversion in triple overtime. Grey finished with 27 carries for 121 yards and touchdown runs of one yard and two yards, and nine catches for 61 yards. Keith Ridley threw for a season-best 326 yards after completing 34-of-56 passes with a touchdown while Luke Gadson had seven catches for a team-high 94 yards.

On defense, Hasan Dominick led the Owls with 13 tackles and a sack while Jahlil Watson had eight tackles and 1.5 sacks. Joenel Figueroa and Da'Juan Banks both recorded interceptions while Jean Desir had four tackles and a fumble recovery. Youssef Gamel had five tackles and forced a fumble while Joe Digello had four tackles and sack and a pass break-up.

The start of the game leaned in favor of the Setters as Tyreek Smith returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give Pace a 7-0 lead. After an Owls fumble that Pace returned inside the 20 yard line, Brandon Sobotker made it 14-0 on a nine-yard run.

From there, the Owls defense was dominant, holding Pace to 149 yards for the rest of the afternoon while the Owls piled on 475 yards of total offense. Southern also held a sizable advantage in time of possession, 40:07 to 19:53, and held Pace to 1-for-13 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth.

After Andreas Picarelli backed up the Setters inside the 10 yard line, Southern forced a three-and-out capped by a six-yard sack by Watson. On the Owls ensuing possession, Ridley hooked up with Gadson for 11 yards before Gray had runs of 11 and two to put the Owls on Pace's nine yard line. Ridley then found Papallo in the corner of the end zone to cut Pace's lead to 14-7.

Coming out of the half, the two teams traded possessions before Southern when on a 16-yard, 72-yard drive that began with a Papallo 16-yard reception and included Gray racking up 35 yards. Ridley then found Ryan Soules for a 20-yard reception before Gray scored from a yard out to tie the game at 14-14.

In overtime, Pace converted on a field goal to tie the game to take a 17-14 lead. Orlin Lopez then matched it to tie the game at 17-17 and send it to a second overtime. In the second overtime, it was Gray again, scoring from two yards to give Southern a 23-17 lead before Pace quarterback Israel Lopez scored on a 14-yard run to tie it at 23-23. As both teams are required to go for the two-point conversion, both failed to convert sending the game to triple overtime.

After a pair of failed conversion attempts by the Owls, Pace appeared to win their Homecoming Game when Lopez rolled to his right on a keeper before dropping a pass to a receiver in the end zone. The player ended up ineligible, nullifying the play. Pace then had back-to-back possessions that the Owls stopped before Ridley found Papallo for the game-winning conversion.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 28 when it plays at Post at 1 p.m.
