SCSU Football Tripped At Franklin Pierce, 17-14

RINDGE, N.H. – Southern Connecticut football dropped a heartbreaker at Franklin Pierce as the Ravens chipped in a field goal as time expired to take the 17-14 win. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the NE10 while Franklin Pierce improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Keith Ridley threw for a season-best 293 yards as he completed 21-of-35 passes with two touchdowns. E'lijah Gray had seven catches for 106 yards and a 30-yard touchdown and also totaled 61 yards rushing on nine carries. Tylon Papallo totaled six catches for a season-best 142 yards and a 44-yard touchdown catch. His 44-yard catch was his longest of the season and he has now scored in three of his last four games.

Defensively, Youseff Gamel led the Owls with 11 tackles including one for a loss. Hasan Dominick totaled eight tackles, with two for a loss, and broke up a pass. Ray Magliozzi had six tackles while Jahlil Watson had four and two quarterback hurries.

Trailing 7-0, Southern put together an 11-play, 72-yard drive that was capped by a 30-yard catch by Gray to tie the game at 7-7. Tarik Hetmyer picked up a first down on an 18-yard catch followed by a five-yard catch by Ryan Soules before Ridley hooked up with Gray in the flat. Gray then made a run down the sideline, capped by a dive and a reach for the pylon to tie the game at 7-7 with 50 seconds remaining in the half.

Late in the third quarter, Gray picked up 14 yards on a run on 4th and 5 to give the Owls a first down in Ravens territory. On the next play, Papallo beat his man down the seam and Ridley delivered a perfect pass over his receiver's shoulder to give Southern a 14-7 lead.

In the 4th, Ridley hooked up with Papallo again on a 44-yard pass on the Ravens' sideline but was picked off on the next play. The result was a 15-play, 60-yard drive for Franklin Pierce that ended with a touchdown. With five minutes to play, the Owls took the ball at their own 10-yard line. Gray cut the distance in half with a 40-yard run that set the Owls up on the 50. A pass interference call and a 10-yard catch by Divine Edwards put the Owls on Franklin Pierce's 18-yard line. After Shawn Martin ran for three yards, Owls place kicker Orlin Lopez went out to give the Owls the lead. His field goal attempt from 15 yards was tipped at the line by a defender and sailed wide, giving the Ravens the ball with 1:12 on the clock.

The Owls forced Franklin Pierce to a three-and-out on their next possession to take control of the ball at Southern's 43-yard line, but a fumble gave the ball back to Franklin Pierce before a penalty moved the Ravens to the 33. A 28-yard reception for the Ravens gave them the ball on Southern's five-yard line before FPU's Nolan Startzell converted on the field goal as time expired.

Southern is back in action for its Homecoming Game against American International on Saturday, Oct. 14 with Senior Day Festivities planned for the start of the game.
