Angel Lee Wins Gymnastics East Conference Balance Beam Championship

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Southern Connecticut junior Angel Lee (Chino Hills, Calif.) won the 2023 Gymnastics East Balance Beam Championship at the annual conference championship, which was hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Lee became the Owls' first GEC Champion in conference history, which is in its second-year of existence.

In addition to Lee capturing the title on the Beam, Hannah Stahlbrodt (Cicero, N.Y.) finished second in the All-Around competition and Ciana Rios (Vineland, N.J.) finished third on the Uneven Parallel Bars.

Stahlbrodt, the Owls' record holder in All-Around score and All-Around season average, had not competed in the event all season before last weekend. Stahlbrodt suffered a season-ending injury in the middle of last season and came back to put on a performance for the Owls at this year's conference championship. Stahlbrodt posted a 9.650 on the Beam to start the day and followed with a 9.825 on the Floor. On the Vault she posted a 9.625 before wrapping up the day with a 9.725 on the Bars for an All-Around score of 38.825.

As a team, Southern posted a 192.525 while the Bars team won their first session competition with a score of 47.950. The Owls started the day on the Beam, which in addition Lee's Championship-winning 9.875, saw Alexa Melanson (Moncton, New Brunswick) finish tied for 10th with a 9.750. Libby Allen (Franklin, Tenn.) finished 23rd with a 9.675 while Stahlbrodt was 25th.

Following the Beam, the Owls moved onto the Floor, where Stahlbrodt's 9.825 led the Owls in the event and tied for seventh place. Hanna Zebdi (Ashburn, Va.), a two-time GEC First Team selection in the event posted a 9.775 for 23rd place while Allen finished in 28th place with a 9.750.

On the Vault, it was Stahlbrodt again with a team-leading score as she posted a 9.625, tied with Zebdi, for 24th place. The Owls concluded the day on the Bars, with Rios leading the way with a 9.825 for a tie of third place. Stahlbrodt was close behind with a 9.725 for a tie of 13th place followed by Audrey Arnold (Kirkland, Wa.) with a 9.625 for 24th place.
