SCSU Football Battles In 27-26 Loss At No. 13 Shepherd

(* Statistics are unofficial, and will be updated; 9/2/2023)

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV – Southern Connecticut football dropped a heartbreaker at No. 13 Shepherd to open the season, falling to the Rams, 27-26. The Owls led for most of the game before the hometown team snuck out a season-opening win with a touchdown with 23 seconds left in the game.

Division I transfer Keith Ridley had an impressive Owls debut as he threw for 302 yards on 18-of-28 passing with a touchdown, while also running for 17 yards, consistently moved the Owls offense downfield on four scoring drives. Shawn Martin scored twice for the Owls, once on the ground and once threw the air, while leading Southern with seven catches for 71 yards including a 16-yard touchdown reception. Martin also had 14 carries for 86 yards and a 15-yard kickoff return.

All three of the Owls running backs found the endzone, as newcomers E'lijah Gray scored on a one yard run to give the Owls a 7-0 lead and John Amaning's first Owls touchdown came from two yards out and gave Southern a 26-21 lead with 1:28 to play. Luke Gadson had two catches for 71 yards including a 56 yard reception that set-up Martin for a one-yard touchdown run to give the Owls a 14-7 lead. Tylon Papallo had four catches for 52 yards, while Tarik Hetmyer's 17-yard catch on third down late in the third quarter led to Martin's 16-yard TD.

Defensively, Hasan Dominick, Jr. had six tackles and two sacks while forcing a fumble, which Shepherd was able to recover. That play led to a 42-yard bomb from Ridley to Ryan Soules that set up Amaning's go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Joenel Figueroa led Southern with eight tackles while Jahlil Watson had six. Joe DiGello had three tackles and a sack while Jean Desir forced another fumble and broke up a pass. Quinton Haughton broke up two passes, including one on a corner blitz in the Rams' backfield.

Southern returns to New Haven to host Assumption for a non-conference matchup for its season opener on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 12 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. Live video and live statistics will be available for the game and can be accessed as the Official Website for SCSU Athletics, SCSUOwls.com.
