SCSU Football Tops Saint Anselm, 6-3; Papallo Catches Owls Lone Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut football picked up its first win of the 2023 season with a 6-3 victory at home against Saint Anselm. A close battle from the start, the Owls got on the board inside the final two minutes of play to complete the comeback. Southern improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference while Saint Anselm drops to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Tylon Papallo entered the game as questionable, and didn't play in the first half. In the second half, he made six catches for a team-high 82 yards including a 21-yard touchdown to put the Owls in front. Papallo also had a 17-yard reception on the drive that set-up Southern's lone score of the day.

E'lijah Gray had 22 carries in the game and compiled 137 yards on the ground including a 32-yard run in the second half. He also had a 50-plus yard run that was negated by a holding penalty. Defensively, Joe DiGello returned to the Owls lineup after missing Southern's matchup against Bentley last week and finished with a team-high 10 tackles, with two sacks and three quarterback hurries while also forcing a fumble.

Hasan Dominick had nine tackles while Youssef Gamel finished with six tackles, a sack that ended the game and also forced a fumble. Chris White broke up two passes.

Southern returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 7 when it travels to Rindge, N.H. to take on Franklin Pierce at 1 p.m.
