WORCESTER, Mass. - Southern Connecticut volleyball defeated Assumption University, 3-1, on the road in an NE10 matchup on Friday night. The Owls improved to an overall record of 3-14 and an NE10 record of 1-1. The Greyhounds dropped to an overall record of 5-10 and an NE10 record of 0-2.
Sydney Bennett led the Owls with a career-best of 13 kills, as she hit .478 against Assumption.
Raegen Emery recorded 11 kills and
Victoria Pascual had eight of her own. For digs, Pascual had a career-best of 19 as
Jalie Miller had 13 and
Madi Roar,
Lily Miller and Emery all had seven digs.
Lily Miller had a team-best of 20 assists while Roar added 16 and
Jalie Miller had five.
Dylan Marney,
Jalie Miller and Roar each had a team-best of two service aces. For blocks,
Sarah Stark, Emery, and Bennett all had a team-best of a block.
Stark also recorded seven kills, while she hit .500 and had a service ace,
Isabel Alvarez had six kills and an assist and
Jasmine Stroud had a career-high of four kills against the Greyhounds.
Assumption took the first set with a scoreline of 25-16. In the second set, the Owls returned with momentum as they jumped to an early lead; however, the Greyhounds didn't back down. It was a back-and-forth battle from this point on, as the lead was traded multiple times, until Southern took the lead with a kill by
Sydney Bennett that led to the Owls winning five straight points and an additional point to end the set, 25-19.
Heading into the third set, both teams continued to battle one another hard as Southern did their best to stop the Greyhounds' advances as the Owls took the third with a score of 25-20. In the fourth set, Southern started with a 3-0 lead which led to Assumption coming back to tie up the score; nonetheless, the Owls held onto their momentum to take the set with a score of 25-16 and a 3-1 victory on the road.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in Colchester, VT. to face NE10 opponent, Saint Michael's College at 5:00 p.m. The Owls come back home to Pelz Gym on Friday, Oct. 18 at 5:00 p.m. in an NE10 matchup against Bentley University.
