SCSU Men's Soccer Tops Assumption, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Three different Owls scored as the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team cruised to a 3-1 win against Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, Southern improved to 5-5-3 overall and 3-4-1 in NE10 play while Assumption dropped to 3-8-2 overall and 0-6-1 in conference action.

Alex da Cunha led the Owls with a goal and an assist while the Owls' leading scorer Jose Clemente and Samuel Nagy also found the back of the net. Ozar Razo picked up an assist and Devin Juan stopped seven of Assumption's eight shots on goal to pick up the win.



After a scoreless first half, Southern scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half to jump out to a two-goal lead. In the 46th minute, da Cunha took control of the ball at midfield and set a perfect touch downfield to Clemente, just above the box. Clemente stepped around a defender, drew the goalkeeper out of the net and slid his team-leading eighth goal of the season inside the opposite post.

Two minutes later, Razo's kick from the goalline to the front of the net found da Cunha who redirected his second goal of the season past the Greyhounds' keeper to give Southern a 2-0 lead.

After Assumption got on the board in the 67th minute, on a penalty kick after a foul was called on the Owls in the box, Southern was awarded a kick of their own. Samuel Nagy blasted a shot past Assumption's goalkeeper to give Southern a 3-1 lead with his third marker of the season.

The game was marred by physical play from the start as a total of 27 fouls. The recipient of much of the physical play was Juan who stopped everything that Assumption threw at him over the 90 minutes. It was the 10th time this season that Juan held the opposition to a goal-or-less as he improved to 6-6-3 overall with a 1.129 goals-against average.

Southern is back in action with its final home game of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 29 when it hosts Molloy at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
