SCSU Football Mourns The Loss Of Former Captain Louis DiRienzo, Jr. '16

Southern Connecticut State University football is saddened by the loss of former Owls captain Louis DiRienzo, Jr. '15. Direnzo passed on June 27, 2026 at just 34 years old.

DiRienzo joined the Owls in 2010 after a scholastic career at New Rochelle (N.Y.) High School where he was honored with All-State, All-County, All-Section and All-League accolades. After redshirting for the 2010 season, DiRienzo saw action over three seasons before being named a team captain in 2015 when he appeared in three games. DiRienzo earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Southern Connecticut in 2016 and went on to complete his master's degree in physical education from Springfield in 2018. 

As of his untimely passing, DiRienzo had just completed his first season as linebackers coach at Monmouth University and was set to become the Hawks' defensive coordinator for the upcoming season. Prior to his time at Monmouth, DiRienzo spent five seasons at Springfield College including four seasons as defensive coordinator and was part of four-straight NEWMAC Championships. In 2023, he was named Co-Assistant Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of New England. DiRienzo also held positions at Rutgers in 2019 and Wagner in 2018. 

DiRienzo, 34, is survived by his wife Allie and their twin daughters Audrina and Giavanna. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 2 at Westchester Funeral Home in Eastchester, N.Y. from 3-8 p.m. while services will be held on Friday, July 3 at Assumption Church in Tuckahoe, N.Y. at 9:30 a.m.
