SCSU Baseball Comes From Behind To Beat College of Staten Island, 7-6 In 10 Innings.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball defeated College of Staten Island, 7-6 in 10 Innings, to improve to 4-1 on the year. The Owls came back from a 6-5 deficit to walk-off on the Dolphins for the win.

Jake Gruttadauria was 2-for-3 with a run scored an RBI while Chad Fedeli drove Walker home with the game-winning run. On the mound, Steve Phillips gave up one unearned run on five hits over fiving innings striking out six but ended up taking the no-decision. Spencer Fox logged five innings in relief, finishing with six strikeouts and only three earned runs.

After Staten Island took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning, the Owls answered in the bottom half with five runs to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Jake Chacho drove in Jack Drewry while Walker doubled home Chacho to give Southern a 2-1 lead. Gruttadauria followed with a RBI double to score Walker before Derrick Jagello drove Gruttadauria home with a triple. Jagello scored on a wild pitch to give the Owls a four-run lead.

Staten Island came all the way back to take a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Billy Sullivan blasted a one-out double down the left field line. Jack Drewry hit a fly ball to left, but the Dolphins' left field fell down and the ball landed for a double to tie the game.

In the 10th, Walker drew a lead-off walk before Gruttadauria bunted him over. After Walker moved to third on a wild pitch, and Jagello was retired for the second out, Fedeli's fly ball to center found "no man's land" between the shortstop, second baseman and center fielder and dropped in for a base hit to score the game-winning run.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 24 when it faces Felician for a doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
