MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut State University swept a non-conference doubleheader against Felician, 14-4 and 6-2, at The Ripken Experience's Polo Grounds in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Owls improved to 6-1 on the year while Felician dropped to 2-10.
Braeden Sparaco spun 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, appearing in both games. In the first game, he picked up his first career save with with three scoreless innings of which he allowed just one baserunner. In the second game, he logged the final 2 2/3 innings in relief to pick up his second win of the year after holding Felician scoreless on one hit. At the plate, Chad Fedeli was 3-for-5 with five RBI with two triples and a home run in the first game. He also drove in and scored a run in the second game. Devin Pelletier was 4-for-5 with a home run in Game 1 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Offensively for the Owls, Chad Fedeli had a career game going 3-5 with two triples and a homerun driving in seven runs. Fedeli set a personal record for RBIs in a game with seven. In addition, Fedeli's homerun matched his season total from last year.
The Owls needed their bats to wake up, down 3-0 going into the 4th inning. The scoring started with Jake Gruttadauria drawing a walk with the bases loaded to pick up a run. With the bases still juiced, a Derrick Jagello single would score two evening the score at three. From there, the Owls offense went quiet until the sixth. With the game tied at 3-3, Chad Fedeli tripled scoring two giving the Owls a two run lead. After a Felician cutting the lead to one the Owls offense would once again ignite in the eighth inning with Fedeli hitting his second triple of the ball game scoring three more runs bringing the Owls lead to 8-4.
Fedeli's triple was not the last of the Owls scoring in the inning, in the following at bat Billy Sullivan singled scoring Fedeli from third bring bringing the lead to 9-4. After Sullivan, Devin Pelletier smacked a ball over the fence scoring Sullivan bringing the Owls lead to 11-4. After an electric 8th inning, the Owls would tack in three more runs in the bottom half of the final frame. Jagello would hit a sack fly scoring Gruttadauria from third. For the Owls final runs of the game, Fedeli would cash in another two runs.
Keegan Daigle started for the Owls and went two and a third innings allowing three runs on six hits. After surrendering a three-run lead, Daigle left the game for reliever Owen Sotero who went three and two thirds innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out three and earning the win. In the sixth, Sparaco pitched the final three frames allowing no runs on one hit while striking out two.
In game two, the Owls won 6-1 and Mike Szturma dominated tossing 4.1 innings allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out one. Sparaco came on in relief and threw the final 2.2 innings allowing no runs, on one hit while striking out two earning him the win.
After a scoreless first inning, the Owls offenses exploded in the second inning putting up five runs. The inning started with a Gruttadauria singling scoring Chacho from third. Following the single, the Owls took advantage of Felician's mistakes with Walker scoring on an error and Fedeli being hit by a pitch scoring Gruttadauria from third. Following the mistakes, Sullivan doubled adding two runs to the lead bringing the Owls lead up to 5-0. To finish the scoring for the inning, Pelletier flied out scoring Fedeli and bringing the Owls lead up to 6-0.
After two Felician runs in the 4th, the Owls took the win 6-2.
Southern is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 9:30am against St. Thomas Aquinas College in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
