Staubley Homers Twice, Talavera Adds Another In 11-1 Win At AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball defeated American International, 11-1, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Springfield, Mass. With the win, the Owls improved to 6-16 overall and 3-10 in the NE10 while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 10-15 overall and 6-7 in conference play.

Brennan Staubley was 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI while Bam Talavera was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Nick Karras, Devin Pelletier and Zaid Vohra all drove in a pair of runs. On the mound, Peter Glidden spun 4 1/3 scoreless innings while holding AIC to two hits before exiting in the bottom of the 5th inning. Jaylen Cruz held AIC to its only run over 2 2/3 while giving up just two hits and striking out three.



In the 1st, Alex Cappellucci stroked a one-out triple to left-center field and scored on Devin Pelletier's ground ball to second base. Staubley made it 2-0 with a lead-off homer in the top of the 2nd inning before Talavera led off the 4th with a solo homer to give Southern a 3-0 lead.

On the mound, Glidden shook off a 1st inning that saw AIC put two runners on base and retire the next eight batters he faced through the 4th. In the fifth, he left with two runners on base before Cruz slammed the door and held the Yellow Jackets off the board. AIC broke through in the 6th with a single run to make it 3-1.

In the top of the 8th, Southern sent 12 batters to the plate and racked up eight runs on six hits including a two-run shot by Staubley for his second round-tripper of the game. Vohra also poked a two-run double and Karras hit a ball off the right-center field fence for a two-run triple. When the dust settled, Southern held an 11-1 lead.

Harry Roy came on in relief in the bottom of the 8th and gave up a two-out single but retired the next batter to escape the inning unscathed. Roy retired the Yellow Jackets in order in the bottom of the 9th to end the game and give the Owls their second win in their last three games.

Southern is back in action this weekend when it faces Bentley for a four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 3 and another on Sunday, April 4 in Waltham, Mass. The Owls return home to host AIC on Wednesday, Apr. 8 and Adelphi for a four-game set on Apr. 11-12.
