Jessica Perucki Throws A Gem To Beat Salem; SCSU Softball Falls To Pitt-Johnstown

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Southern Connecticut softball defeated Salem University, 8-0, before falling to Pitt-Johnstown, 4-3, in Winter Haven, Fla. The Owls dropped to 1-3 on the season.

In the first game, Southern rolled to an 8-0 win behind a stellar performance on the mound by Jessica Perucki. Perucki allowed just two baserunners on the day in a complete game, one-hit shutout while striking out 11 batters. Perucki also had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a RBI and a run scored. At the plate, Gabby Festa was 1-for-3 with three RBI while Rachel Miller also drove in two runs. Emily Lange was 3-for4 with a RBI while Karley Austin was 2-for-4.

Southern used a six-run first inning against Salem to propel them to the win. After Lange popped up to lead off the game, Faith Barbieri walked, and Austin singled to put two runners on base. Katrina Roy's groundball to second was played to third to retire Barbieri before Miller hit a two-out, two-run double to score Austin and Roy and keep the inning going. Perucki then drove home Miller with a single before Nicole Spinelli singled to move Perucki to second. Dominique DeLutri drew a walk to load the bases and Festa cleared them with a double to give Southern a 6-0 lead.

Southern pushed two runs across in the top of the 7th inning when Perucki, Spinelli and DeLutri all singled to load the bases before Lange singled to score Samantha LaFemino – who was running for Perucki – followed by a sacrifice fly by Barbieri that scored Spinelli.

Perucki entered the bottom of the seventh after retiring 14-straight Salem batters and with a no-hitter intact. She retired the lead-off batter to make it 15 in a row before Salem managed a single to break up Perucki's no-hit bid. The Owls hurler then retired the last two batters to end the game.

In the second game, Miller gave the Owls a 1-0 lead in the second inning after she walked to lead off and then stole her way around the bases before then stealing home. In the third, the Owls made it 2-0 when Festa reached on an error then moved to third on a single by Barbieri. Karley Austin drove in Festa with a single to center as the Owls jumped out to a two-run lead. Southern made it 3-0 in the fifth when Barbieri reached on an error with two outs. After she stole second, Austin doubled her home to give Southern a three-run lead.

On the mound, Owl junior Madison Prior cruised through the first six innings, scattering just two hits while holding UPJ scoreless. In the top of the seventh, UPJ put together some timely hitting and took advantage of two SCSU errors to plate four runs and take the lead, which proved to be enough as the Owls could not put a run across in their final at-bats.

Southern returns to action in Winter Haven on Tuesday, Mar. 12 with a 9 a.m. tilt against Southwest Minnesota State followed by a 1:45 p.m. game against Northwood (Tx.) University.
