SCSU Baseball Defeats Molloy, 13-5

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated Molloy, 13-5, in a regional matchup played at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. With the win, Southern improved to 9-5 overall while Molloy dropped to 11-4.

Mike Talavera continued his hot streak with a 4-for-4 day that saw the first-year Owl drive in three runs and score four more, while also stealing two bases. Talavera is now hitting a gawdy .686 (11-16) over his last four games with nine RBI and five stolen bases in five attempts. Jake Gruttadauria also stayed hot with a 3-for-5 day with two RBI while Jake Chacho was 2-for-5 with his first career home run and four RBI. Gruttadauria has six hits in his last nine at-bats over the Owls' last two games with four RBI. He's also riding riding an 11-game hitting streak and leads the team with a .417 average as well as 16 RBI.

Chad Fedeli picked up the win in his first start of the season to improve to 2-0 on the year while Braeden Sparaco converted his second save. Fedeli held Molloy to one run on four hits over five innings while Sparaco pitched the last four innings, racking up eight strikeouts while allowing four runs.

It was Fedeli who got it started at the plate for the Owls when he poked a one-out single in the top of the 1st. Fedeli then stole second and moved to third on a base hit by Billy Sullivan. Talavera's single to left scored Fedeli and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead. Molloy tacked on a run in the bottom half of the inning.

In the 3rd, Sullivan and Jack Drewry were both hit by pitches with two outs. Talavera followed with a single to score Sullivan before Izaiah Walker drove in Drewry and Talavera with a double down the right field line. Chacho singled to score Walker, followed by a base hit by Gruttadauria that moved Chacho to second. Derrick Jagello then singled through the left side of the infield to plate Chacho and give Southern a 6-1 lead.

In the 4th, Sullivan worked a one-out walk before moving to second on a ground out. With two away, Talavera doubled to right-center to score Sullivan. After Walker walked and Talavera stole third, Chacho blasted a three-run shot over the right field fence to give Southern a 10-1 lead.

In the 6th, Talavera doubled to lead off the inning and then stole third before Gruttadauria singled him home to give Southern a 10-run lead, 11-1. The duo accounted for another run in the 8th, with Talavera walking and moving to second on a wild pitch before Gruttadauria hit  two-out single to plate the runner and give Southern a 12-1 lead.

Sparaco, meanwhile, was going to work on the Molloy lineup as he retired the first nine batters he faced heading into the ninth inning. The Owls added another run in the top of the 9th when Alex Cappellucci scored on a wild pitch. Molloy managed to scrap together four hits in the bottom of the ninth to push across four runs but Sparaco was able to pitch out of the jam.

Southern is back in action on Thursday, Mar. 14 when it faces Lynn at 3 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
