SCSU Baseball Falls To Lynn, 5-4

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Lynn University, 5-4, in a non-conference matchup in Boca Raton, Fla. With the loss, Southern dropped to 9-6 overall while Lynn improved to 15-9.

Billy Sullivan was 3-for-4 while Mike Talavera was 1-for-2 with a RBI and a stolen base. Jake Chacho was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Derrick Jagello also drove in a run. Keegan Daigle took the no-decision after holding Lynn to three runs on five hits over fiving innings while John Bucci took the loss after giving up the lead in a three-inning outing.

Daigle was on from the start as he held Lynn scoreless on four hits over the game's first four innings. In the top of the 5th, Chacho walked to lead off the inning before Gruttadauria got on with a two-base error that moved Chacho to third. Jagello then drove a ball to right field that was deep enough to score Chacho and give Southern a 1-0 lead. Patrick Dillon then worked a walk to put runners on the corner before Chad Fedeli's ground ball to second scored Gruttadauria to give Southern a 2-0 lead. Sullivan followed with a base hit that scored Dillon as the Owls held a 3-0 edge.

Lynn got a run back in the bottom of the 5th and then pushed three runs across in the 6th to take a 4-3 lead. A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly in the 7th gave Lynn a 5-3 lead. In the top of the 8th, Southern mounted a comeback as Fedeli and Sullivan singled to lead off the inning. Jack Drewry then moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt before Talavera hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Fedeli.

After Bucci retired the side in the bottom of the 8th, Southern saw an opportunity in the top of the 9th when Chacho led off with a single and was then bunted over by Gruttadauria, but Lynn was able to work out of the threat and secure the win.

Southern has three games remaining on its slate in Florida, all against Felician. The Owls and Felician meet on Friday, Mar. 15 for a 11 a.m. doubleheader and again for a single game on Saturday, Mar. 16. The Owls return home to host Assumption on Tuesday, Mar. 19 at 3 p.m.
