SCSU Baseball Drops Two To SNHU

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball dropped a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire, 2-1 in 10 innings and 7-0 in the nightcap. With the losses, the Owls dropped to 12-10 overall and 0-3 in the NE10 while SNHU improved to 13-8 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Lost in the extra-inning thriller in Game 1 was a brilliant performance by Owls' starter Mike Szturma, who took a no-decision after holding the Penmen scoreless over 7 2/3 on five hits while striking out seven. Szturma didn't a runner past second base all day as he pitched out a several jams to keep the nationally-ranked Penmen at bay. Steve Phillips was equially effective to start Game 2 as the Southpaw gave up just four hits, and a single, unearned run, over the game's first five innings but found trouble in the sixth inning against the heavy-hitting Penmen.

At the plate, Jake Gruttadauria led the Owls with three hits in the doubleheader, and scored the Owls' lone run in the first game on a RBI single by Chad Fedeli. That game was scoreless through nine innings, thanks to Szturma's performance as well as a solid relief effort by Spencer Fox. Fox gave up two runs, in the 10th and 11th innings, over 3 1/3 and ultimately took the loss.

In the 10th, with SNHU scoring in the top half, the Owls had their backs up against the wall. Gruttadauria led off the inning with a single before getting bunted over with a sacrifice by pinch hitter Devin Pelletier.  After the next batter was retired, Fedeli lined a two-out, two-strike single down the right field line to score Gruttadauria and tie the game at 1-1. SNHU manufactured a run in the top of the 11th, but the Owls couldn't get another run across.

In the second game, Phillips stranded four Penmen baserunners over the game's first three innings. In the fourth, a passed ball set up SNHU to score the game's first run, which stood as unearned after the base hit. The Pen then plated three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to seal the win.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 26 when it hosts Saint Anselm for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
