SCSU Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader Against Saint Anselm

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Saint Anselm, winning the first game, 9-3, before the Hawks took the second game, 6-2, at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the split, the Owls went to 13-10 overall and 1-3 in the NE10 while Saint Anselm improved to 8-12 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Chad Fedeli had two hits in each game and also drove in a pair of runs while Izaiah Walker was 3-for-7 for the day. Derrick Jagello was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Patrick Dillon had three doubles in the first game.

In the first game, Patrick Dillon was 3-for-4 with three doubles while driving in a run and scoring another. Chad Fedeli, Billy Sullivan, Izaiah Walker and Derrick Jagello all had two-hit games while Walker and Jagello each drove in a run. Mike Talavera also connected for his first home run as an Owl. On the mound, Keegan Daigle took the no-decision after allowing three runs – two earned – on nine hits over five innings. Braeden Sparaco picked up the win to improve to 4-0 after holding the Hawks scoreless on two hits while striking out four.

Saint Anselm took an early lead with a run in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Dillon roped a one-out double down the left-field line before Fedeli tripled to right to score Dillon with the Owls first run. Sullivan kept the hit parade moving with a double that scored Fedeli to tie the game. After Jack Drewry walked and Talavera flew out, Walker delivered a two-out double to left center that scored Sullivan and gave the Owls a 3-2 lead.

An error in the top of the sixth resulted in the tying run crossing to make it 3-3. The Hawks' lead was short lived as the Owls pushed four runs across in the bottom of the seventh. After Drewry flew out to deep left, Talavera connected for a solo homer to give Southern a 4-3 lead. Walker singled and Chacho walked, before Jake Gruttadauria's come-backer to the mind retired Walker at third. Jagello then doubled down the left field line, sending a shot to the corner, to score Chacho and Gruttadauria to give the Owls a 6-3 lead. Dillon doubled for the third time to score Jagello to give the Owls a four-run lead, 7-3. Southern tacked on two more runs in the eight with Walker and Chacho driving in runs.

In the second game, Saint Anselm jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run top of the first and tacked on another run in the third. Owls starter Jagger Duquette settled in after the first inning, but three errors resulted in three unearned runs over the game's first four inning.

In the bottom of the third, Jagello stroked a one-out single before Dillon walked. Fedeli then singled to right to score Jagello and move Dillon to third before Billy Sullivan drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Fedeli finished the second game with two hits.

Southern is back in action with a three-game series at College of Saint Rose on Mar. 29-30. The Owls and Golden Knights will play a single game on Friday, Mar. 29 at 3 p.m. followed by a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 30.
