Sixth-seeded Southern Connecticut women's basketball will take on top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 21 Bentley for the 2024 Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday, Mar. 10, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass. The Owls head into the title contest against the Falcons following an upset of second-seeded and nationally ranked No. 16 Assumption in the NE10 Semifinals on Thursday, Mar. 7.

The Owls Road To The Championship
 
The Owls vs. Bentley
  • Bentley won both games this season, winning 66-47 in New Haven on Jan. 16 and 72-57 on Feb. 27 in Waltham, Mass.
  • Bentley has won 10 of the last 11 matchups between the two teams.
  • The Owl last win against Bentley on the Falcons home court came on Jan. 28, 2012, 63-59.
  • Southern and Bentley have faced each other six times in NE10 Tournament history, with Bentley winning five of those matchups.
  • The Owls defeated Bentley, 55-36, in the 2006 NE10 Semifinals.
  • Sunday's game will be the second meeting between the two teams for the NE10 Championship. The Owls fell to the Falcons, 79-52, in the 2012 NE10 title game.
  • This will be the first meeting in the NE10 Tournament between the two teams since 2018 when the Falcons defeated the Owls, 64-51, in the NE10 Semifinals.
 
 
History Of The Owls In the NE10 Championship Tournament
  • Southern Connecticut improved to 22-16 all-time in the NE10 tournament with wins against New Haven, Saint Rose and Assumption.  
  • This is the Owls' fourth trip to the NE10 Championship Game and first since 2012. They previously won the conference title in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and lost to Bentley in 2012.
 
The Owls And The 2023-24 NE10 Championship Tournament
  • Southern has earned its way into the 2024 NE10 Championship Game with a First Round win against No. 11 New Haven, 60-44, and upsets against No. 3 Saint Rose in the Quarterfinals, 58-53 and No. 2 Assumption in the Semifinals, 60-47.
  • Southern has won by an average of 11.3 points, averaging 59.3 points per contest while holding its opponents to 48 points per game.
  • The Owls' semifinal upset of Assumption marked the 11th-straight game that the Owls have held their opponent to fewer than 60 points.
  • The second half has been the difference for the Owls as they've outscored their opponents 96-82 in the final two periods.
  • Southern has combined to shoot 43% (65-151) from the floor while holding their opponents to 34.9% (52-149).
  • The Owls have also converted on 41.3% (19-46) from three-point range while holding the opposition to 25% (12-48) from long range.
  • Southern has forced 59 turnovers over three games for a 19.7 average while committing just 12 per game.
  • Southern is also averaging 9.0 steals per game.
  • Makenzie Helms has been the Owls' leading scorer in three tournament games, checking in with a 16.3 scoring clip.
  • Helms has slashed .514/.429/.889 in three games while averaging 5.3 assists per game.
  • Against Assumption, Helms poured in 26 points with five assists. Helms also had 15 points and six assists against Saint Rose and eight points and five assists against New Haven.
  • Rheyna Steinauer is the Owls' second leading scorer despite only playing 16.9 minutes per game. Steinauer averages 9.7 points on 10-of-17 shooting (58.8%) with 1.3 steals per contest.
  • Steinauer had back-to-back double-digit games including an 11-point showing against New Haven and a 14-point display, in which she totaled 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, with four rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes against Saint Rose.
  • Julianna Bonilla leads the Owls' with seven three-pointers while averaging 8.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
  • Bonilla had 13 points and five rebounds while hitting 3-of-5 against New Haven. She followed with a 2-for-4 day from long range against Saint Rose and also totaled six points and six rebounds against Assumption.
  • NE10 Second Team selection Katie Williams leads the team with 6.3 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.7 steals per game while also scoring at a 7.3 per game clip.
  • Williamson shrugged off a tough start against Assumption to total seven points and six rebounds – all in the second half – with three blocks and three steals.
  • Hope Fox's 15 points, five-rebound performance against Assumption helped her to a 6.3 points per game average. Fox hit on 4-of-6 from the floor including 2-for-2 from three-point range while also converting 5-of-6 from the free throw in the Owls' semifinal win.
