RINDGE, N.H. - Southern Connecticut baseball dropped a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Franklin Pierce, 10-9 in the first game and 6-5 in the second game. Southern dropped to an overall record of 18-15 and an NE10 record of 6-8, while Franklin Pierce improved to an overall record of 18-11 and an NE10 record of 12-4.
In Game One,
Patrick Dillon recorded a team-best of four RBIs, two hits and two runs.
Derrick Jagello and
Jake Gruttadauria had a team-best of two runs for the Owls. Pitcher
Mike Szturma had three strikeouts and
Spencer Fox threw five strikeouts on the mound.
Southern started their scoring by putting five runs on the board in the top of the second. However, the Ravens answered with two runs of their own. Franklin Pierce would go on to score five more runs in the next three innings, to take a 7-5 lead over Southern. After both teams remained scoreless in the seventh inning, the Owls poured on four runs, to take the lead back. Yet again, the Raven responded with two runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, the Ravens had a walkoff homerun, to get the victory of 10-9 over Southern Connecticut.
In Game Two,
Jack Drewry had a team-best of two hits, three RBIs, a run and an Homerun for the Owls. Four players had a run:
Chad Fedeli,
Billy Sullivan,
Mike Talavera and
Jake Gruttadauria. Pitcher
Steve Phillips threw seven strikeouts for Southern Connecticut.
The Ravens put a five runs on the board in the first three innings while the Owls remained scoreless. Nevertheless, Southern Connecticut recorded three runs in the top of the inning, to cut the Ravens' lead to just 5-3. Both teams remained at zero runs in the fifth inning but the Owls had a run in the sixth and the seventh, to tie the game. Franklin Pierce had a walkoff double to end the close game, 6-5.
The Owls return to action on Monday, April 15 in Colchester, VT for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Saint Michael's College, starting at 12:00 p.m.
