SCSU Baseball Sweeps Saint Michael’s in NE10 Doubleheader

COLCHESTER, VT. – Southern Connecticut baseball swept Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Conference Doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Owls took the first game, 6-3 and then got the victory in seven innings with a score line of 15-4. Southern improved to an overall record of 20-15, and an NE10 record of 8-8 and Saint Michael's dropped to an overall record of 7-18 and an NE10 record of 4-7.
 
In Game One, Jack Drewry led the team with a team-best of three RBIs and two hits. Catcher Billy Sullivan recorded a team-best of two runs, two hits and an RBI. Pitcher Keegan Daigle (2-1) got the win as he pitched for 8.1 innings, had five strikeouts, while allowing seven hits and only three runs.
 
In the first inning, Patrick Dillon got on base first, to start the Owls' scoring. It was Billy Sullivan's double that sent Chad Fedeli to third and Dillon to home plate. Then, Jack Drewry singled down the right field line, to send Sullivan and Fedeli home. Southern Connecticut took a 3-0 lead, going into the bottom of the first.
 
The Purple Knights answered back with two runs, to cut the Owls' lead to 3-2. Through the next three innings, both teams stayed deadlocked with no runs scored and a few hits. However, in the top of the fifth, Chad Fedeli singled up the middle to bring Derrick Jagello across home. In the top of the sixth, Drewry hit a double to right center, that allowed Sullivan to score after his single from the top of the order.
 
In the seventh, Jake Chacho blasted a homerun to center field, to give the Owls, a 6-2 lead. Saint Michael's got a run in the bottom of the ninth but Braeden Sparaco threw a strikeout to end the game with Southern Connecticut getting the 6-3 victory.
 
In Game Two, pitcher Chad Fedeli (3-1) got the victory as he pitched six innings, while striking out six while allowing seven hits and two runs. Zakary Droukas led the Owls with three runs, three hits and three RBIs. Izaiah Walker recorded a team-best of four RBIs and a homerun. Derrick Jagello and Jake Gruttadauria posted three hits. Patrick Dillon led the team with two stolen bases against the Purple Knights.
 
In the first inning, Patrick Dillon moved quickly after his at bat as he got on base then stole second, stole third and crossed home plate on a wild pitch. This gave Southern Connecticut an early 1-0 lead.
 
It was an explosive second inning for the Owls, as nine runs were scored, and five hits were recorded. Gruttadauria started the momentum with a walk, a few batters later with bases loaded, Dillon was walked as Gruttadauria scored the second run of the game. Zakary Droukas hit a double down the left field line as that brought Jagello and Fedeli home. Sullivan then doubled to right center, this allowed Droukas and Dillon to bring in two more runs. Shortly after, Walker hit a homerun, putting four runs on the board. Southern Connecticut took a 10-0 lead, going into the bottom of the second.
 
In the third and fourth innings, Southern posted four more runs, to take a commanding lead. Nevertheless, after three scoreless innings, Saint Michael's recorded three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, through a Wettemann singled to left field to bring Droukas home, for the Owls' 15th run of the game. In the seventh, the Purple Knights added one more run to their total but Southern Connecticut closed out the game with a 15-4 win.
 
 The Owls return to action on Wednesday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m. against Elm-City rival, the University of New Haven at the Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Connecticut.
