SCSU Baseball Sweeps AIC, 8-1 and 15-2

Southern Connecticut swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at American International, winning the first game, 8-1, and the second game, 15-2. With the sweep, the Owls improved to 23-19 overall and 10-10 in the NE10.



Game 1 Recap
In the first game, Owls' starter Mike Szturma turned in a solid performance, holding the Yellow Jackets to a single run on seven hits over seven innings while striking out seven. Spencer Fox pitched the 8th and 9th, giving up two hits and holding AIC scoreless. Mike Talavera was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored while Derrick Jagello was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Jake Gruttadauria and Chad Fedeli also drove in two runs, each.  

In the second game, Steve Phillips picked up his fifth win of the season after holding AIC to two runs on 10 hits over five innings while striking out seven. Braeden Sparaco pitched four scoreless innings in relief with seven strikeouts to pick up his team-leading fifth save of the season. Chad Fedeli was 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored while Jack Drewry was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Mike Talavera was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Devin Pelletier connected on a three-run homer. Izaiah Walker also drove in three runs on a homer and Jake Gruttadauria was 3-for-5.

Game 2 Recap
Southern used a six-run 4th inning to break a 0-0 tie and take a 6-0 lead. Billy Sullivan walked to lead off the inning before the next batter was retired and Mike Talavera followed with a base hit to move Sullivan to second. After the next batter struck out, Devin Pelletier was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jake Gruttadauria then singled through the right side of the infield to score Sullivan and Talavera with the game's first runs.

After Gruttadauria stole second to put two runners in scoring position, Derrick Jagello's single to left scored Pelletier and Gruttadauria to give Southern a 4-0 lead. Patrick Dillon worked a walk before a wild pitch moved Jagello to third and Dillon to second. Chad Fedeli then singled to left to plate both runners and give the Owls a 6-0 lead.

The Owls tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Talavera singled and Izaiah Walker walked before an error on a double-play ball hit by Pelletier allowed Talavera to score. Jagello then drove in Walker to give Southern an 8-0 lead. AIC broke through in the fifth to break-up starter Mike Szturma's shutout bid.

Patrick Dillon led off with a double before scoring on a single by Fedeli. After Fedeli stole second, he went to third on a wild pitch before Billy Sullivan walked. Jack Drewry then drove in Fedeli with a single to give Southern an early 2-0 lead. Southern made is 6-0 with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a RBI double by Dillon and a two-run double by Fedeli. Drewry also hit a sacrifice fly to score score Fedeli and give Southern a 6-0 lead.

In the fourth, Southern tacked on four more runs. After Talavera drove in Fedeli and Sullivan to give the Owls an 8-0 lead, Izaiah Walker connected for his third home run of the season – a three-run bomb – that gave Southern an 11-0 lead. Drewry then drove in his third run of the afternoon in the top of the eighth inning with a ball over the right fielder's head that scored Sullivan.

After AIC put two runs across in the sixth, Southern scored four runs in the eighth, including a three-run homer by Pelletier to cap the scoring for the day.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 30 with a special matinee game at Dunkin' Park in Hartford, Conn. The Owls will face Bridgeport at 10 a.m. for the Hartford Yardgoals "Baseball In Education" day as the seats will be filled with elementary school children from the area.
