SCSU Softball Clinches NE10 Tournament Berth With Sweep Of Saint Michael's

Behind a pair of clutch performances on the mound by Jessica Perucki and Ashley Lewis, as well as some timely hitting from the Owls' offense, Southern Connecticut clinched the 8th and final seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament with a sweep of Saint Michael's in Colchester, Vt. The Owls' wrap-up the NE10 regular season with a record of 8-14 in conference play and 17-23 overall.

The Owls' playoff berth ultimately came down to a 9-1 win against Pace on Sunday, Apr. 21 in determining the tiebreaker as the Owls, Saint Michael's and Saint Rose all stood at 8-14. The Owls head into the NE10 Tournament with wins in five of its last seven games and will travel to fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Apr. 30 for a first-round game set for a 5 p.m. start.

In the first game, Perucki hurled a complete-game shutout, holding Saint Michael's to three hits while striking out a season-best 12. Perucki was dominant and in control for the entire game. In the third, she retired the last batter and then retired the Purple Knights in order through the sixth, which was also the first time Saint Michael's had two runners on base in the game.

The Owls pushed its first run across in the top of the second inning when Rachel Miller and Dominique DeLutri led off the inning with a pair of singles before Nadia Cestari hit into a double play that scored Miller. In the sixth, it was Cestari for the Owls with a two-out double that scored Gabriella Festa to give Southern and Perucki an insurance run. DeLutri finished the day 2-for-2.

In the second game, it was Ashley Lewis with a gem to stun the Purple Knights. Lewis went 6 2/3 innings while allowing two runs – only one of which was earned – while scattering seven hits. Perucki came back to get the final out for the save in the seventh inning.

In the first, the Owls capitalized on a pair or errors to push their first run across. In the third, Karley Austin poked a one-out single to left before Perucki was retired for the second out. Festa's ground ball to short was misplayed before Miller doubled down the left field line to score Austin and give the Owls a 2-0 lead. DeLutri made it 3-0 in the fifth with a singled that scored pinch runner Karlie Stefanidis, who entered the game after Perucki singled.

The Owls kept it going in the sixth. After Nicole Spinelli walked and Samantha LaFemina bunted her over, Emily Lange was retired. Austin delivered again with a two-out double to score Spinelli as the Owls took a 4-0 lead through the top half of the sixth. Saint Michael's was able to manufacture a pair of runs to cut Southern's lead in half, 4-2. In the 7th, Cestari delivered for the Owls with a RBI double that scored Miller and gave Southern a three-run lead. In the seventh, Lewis retired the first two batters she faced before Saint Michael's put the next two runners on base. With the tying run at the plate, Perucki came in to get the last out and punch the Owls' ticket to the NE10 tournament.

For the Owls, Lewis improved to 6-8 on the year and is 4-1 with a 1.09 ERA in her last six starts, all of which she has allowed two earned runs just once. Perucki improved to 9-8 with two saves and a 0.81 ERA for the year.
