SCSU Softball Falls To Assumption

NEW HAVEN, CONN-- Southern Connecticut State University Softball fell to Assumption in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader at the Pelz Field on Friday May 1. With the losses, the Owls fall to 20-24 overall and 13-21 in the NE10, while the Greyhounds improve to 25-24 overall and 20-14 in the NE10. 

Moira Collins and Giselle DeLutri both got starts in the circle for the Owls. In game one, DeLutri tossed five innings and allowed four runs, on four hits and struck out eight. In addition to her start, DeLutri came in for the final inning of game two and allowed one hit and struck out one. Collins in game two tossed 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits and struck out two. In relief, Ashley Lewis tossed a combined 4.2 innings across the doubleheader and allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two. Offensively for the Owls, Brianna Pearson led the way with four hits and an RBI, and Olivia Young had three hits and an RBI. 

Game 1: Assumption 5, SCSU 1

In game one, DeLutri got the start and tossed five innings and allowed four runs, on four hits and struck out eight. In relief, Ashley Lewis went two innings and allowed one run on no hits and struck out one. Offensively for the Owls, Pearson led the way going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Young, Christina DeNovellis and Cheyenne LaTouche all had hits as well. 

Assumption got the scoring started for game two as they drove in a run in the top of the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead. From there, the Greyhounds added another run in the 4th and two in the 5th, to head into the bottom of the 5th inning with a 4-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Owls began to mount a comeback. The inning began with a lead off single by LaTouche and a walk by Izzy Ingersoll to put runners on first and second base. After a groundout by Gianna Iaquinto that allowed LaTouche and Ingersoll to advance into scoring position, Pearson singled through the left side to cut the Greyhound lead down to 4-1.

That would be the last of the Owls offense as the Greyhounds added an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning to take the 5-1 win. 

Game 2: Assumption 4, SCSU 3

In game two, Collins started the game in the circle for the Owls and threw 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits and struck out two. In relief, Lewis went 2.2 innings allowed one run on three hits and struck out one and DeLutri pitched the final inning and held the Greyhounds scoreless with one strikeout. Offensively for the Owls, Young led the way as she went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Brianna Pearson had two hits. 

The Greyhounds got the scoring started in the top of the 2nd inning on a single to center field to take a 1-0 lead. The Owls responded in the bottom half of the inning. The inning began with a walk by Iaquinto. After a ground out by Young that allowed Iaquinto to advance to second base, Nadia Cestari singled to score Iaquinto and tie the game at 1-1. 

After a quiet third inning, the Greyhounds added three runs in the top of the 4th inning to take a 4-1 lead. 

The Owls added another run in the bottom of the 4th inning. The offense for the inning began with a triple by Samantha LaFemina. LaFemina scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat to cut the lead down to 4-2. 

After a scoreless 5th and 6th inning, the Owls began to come back in the bottom half of the 7th inning. After a fielder's choice by Sophia Angiolini and a walk by Iaquinto the Owls had runners on first and second with two outs. Young then singled to score Iaquinto and cut the lead down to 4-3. That would be the last of the Owls offense for game two as they Greyhounds retired Nadia Cestari for the final out and took the 4-3 win. 

The Owls conclude their regular season on Saturday May 2 with a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader against Assumption at the Pelz Field beginning at noon. Prior to the start of the the first game, the Owls will be honoring their seniors in their senior day ceremony beginning at 11:40am.
