SCSU Baseball Tops Bridgeport, 5-2, At Dunkin Park For "Baseball In Education" Day

HARTFORD, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated University of Bridgeport, 5-2, in a non-conference game at Dunkin' Park in Hartford, Conn. The Owls and Purple Knights played a 10:30 a.m. game as part of the Hartford Yard Goats "Baseball in Education" Day that drew over 3,000 to what many consider to be the best minor ballpark in the country. With Southern serving as the home team, SCSU Interim President Dr. Dwayne Smith threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Bridgeport got on the board first as a pair of hits resulted in an early run. Southern responded in the bottom of the second inning when Mike Talavera singled to right center and then stole second before moving to third on the errant throw by the catcher. Devin Pelletier's sacrifice fly scored Talavera and tied the game at 1-1. The Owls defense was on-point, converting four double plays including three in the first three innings. Southern starter Jagger Duquette also pitched five solid innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three but would take the no-decision.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pelletier walked to lead off the inning before Jake Gruttadauria bunted him over. Pelletier then tagged up on Derrick Jagello's fly ball to deep center to move to third before Patrick Dillon singled to drive him in and give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

Bridgeport responded in its next at-bat, pushing a run across against reliever Braeden Sparaco to tie the game at 2-2. Sparaco settled in and would eventually get the win after giving up four hits over three innings with one run allowed. Meanwhile, the Owls scored in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take a 5-2 lead. In the sixth, Talavera led off with a single and then moved to third on an error before scoring on a single by Pelletier. In the seventh, Chad Fedeli and Jack Drewry were hit by pitches before Izaiah Walker's base hit scored Fedeli. In the eighth, Gruttadauria reached on an error and was bunted over by Jagello before Dillon ripped a double to score him and give the Owls the three-run lead.

In the ninth, Spencer Fox entered the game in the save situation and struck out three of the four batters he faced for his fifth save of the year. Dillon finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI while Talavera also had two hits and Pelletier drove in two runs. Sparaco improved to 5-2 on the season.

Southern returns to action with a regular-season ending series at home against Pace on Mar. 3-4 at The Ballpark at SCSU.
