SCSU Baseball Defeats Pace, 6-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball picked up a 6-1 Northeast-10 Conference win against Pace at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the win, the Owls improved to 12-13 in the NE10  and 26-20 overall while Pace dropped to 25-17 overall and 15-10 in conference play.

As this weekend hosts the final games of the regular season, the Owls currently sit in fifth place in the NE10 Southwest Division behind College of Saint Rose, who is 13-13 while the Owls are a game behind in the win column at 12-13. Saint Rose has a single game remaining on Saturday, May 4 at Adelphi while the Owls and Pace will play two. If the Golden Knights win, they would improve to 14-13 and would force the Owls to win both games on Saturday. With a Saint Rose loss, the Owls would need to split as the Owls hold the tiebreaker against the Golden Knights after taking two of three earlier in the season.

Mike Szturma improved to 5-3 on the year with a dominant seven-inning outing against the Setters. Szturma gave up one run, after pitching five-straight scoreless innings, on six hits while striking out six. Spencer Fox pitched two scoreless innings to close out the win and record his team-leading sixth save of the year.

At the plate, Mike Talavera was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored while Izaiah Walker was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Chad Fedeli drove in two runs and Billy Sullivan and Derrick Jagello each drove in a run.

Southern got on the board in the 3rd inning after Patrick Dillon and Chad Fedeli walked with one out. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before Sullivan's fly ball to center scored Dillon and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead. Pace got a run back in the top of the 6th to tie at 1-1 as the only blemish on Szturma's otherwise brilliant performance. Pace's Anthony Labitta hit a fly ball down the left field line that was out-of-play by the left fielder, shortstop and third baseman. Owls' shortstop Dillon managed to track it down and making a diving stab, but the ground dislodged the ball which resulted in a triple after it bounced away from the other two fielders. Mason Baroni then drove in Labitta with a single to knot it up.

In the bottom half of the inning, Talavera blasted a double to the left-center field gap and went to third on a fielding error by Pace's shortstop. Walker hit one deep enough to center to score Talavera and give the Owls a 2-1 lead. In the 8th, Jagello singled and then Dillon reached on an error to put both runners in scoring position before Fedeli hit a chopper over the second baseman and plate two more runs to make it 4-1.

Southern added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th. Talavera stroked his second double of the game to lead-off the inning and then went to third on a passed ball. Walker followed with a single to left to score Talavera. Devin Pelletier moved Walker to second while reaching on an error before Jake Gruttadauria bunted both runners over. Jagello and Walker then pulled off the squeeze play with a perfect bunt that allowed Walker to score from third.

Southern and Pace will meet again on Saturday, May 4 for a doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU. Prior to the start of the game, the Owls will host Senior Day at 11:40 a.m. to honor John Bucci, Jagger Duquette, Brett Fee, Mike Ferrett and Josh Wettemann.
