SCSU Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader Against Adelphi

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Adelphi at The Ballpark at SCSU. The Panthers took the first game, 4-1, before the Owls picked up a 10-0 win in the nightcap behind a brilliant performance behind southpaw Steve Phillips. The Owls go to 16-13 overall and 4-6 in NE10 play while Adelphi goes to 11-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Phillips was masterful in the second game of the Owls' twin bill against the Panthers. The Owls senior lefty spun seven scoreless innings while holding Adelphi to three hits and striking out 10.

After an error allowed a runner on base in the first, Phillips sat down 17 of the next 19 batters he faced. In the seventh, he gave up a single between a pair of pop-outs before hitting a batter, which marked the first time in the game that Adelphi had multiple runners on base. He then struck out the last batter he faced before Braeden Sparaco entered in relief in the top of the 8th. Sparaco pitched two scoreless innings.

At the plate, Jack Drewry was 3-for-5 and drove in half of the Owls' runs, highlighted by a grand slam in the eighth inning. Chad Fedeli was 3-for-5 while Derrick Jagello was 2-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored. Drewry also drove in a run in the first game, giving him six for the day. Mike Talavera was 2-for-3 in Game 1 while Patrick Dillon scored the Owls only run. Dillon also scored twice in the second game.

Jagger Duquette took the loss in the first game despite a solid performance. Duquette was tagged for three unearned runs on five hits over six innings while striking out seven.
The Owls and Panthers meet again on Sunday, Apr. 7 at 1 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
