SCSU Softball Comes Up Short At Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut softball lost a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games at Assumption, 2-1 and 3-2, in Worcester, Mass. With the two losses, Southern dropped to 9-12 overall and 3-4 in the NE10 while Assumption improved to 12-9 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

In the first game, Jessica Perucki was 3-for-4 with a RBI at the plate and also tossed 6 2/3 innings, striking out six but allowing both Greyhounds' runs. Nadia Cestari was 2-for-3 while Emily Lange drew three walks and scored Southern's only run. Southern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 5th. After Lange drew her third walk of the game with one out, Karley Austin doubled to left center to give the Owls two runners in scoring position. Gabriella Festa then got on board before Jessica Perucki singled through the left side of the infield to score Lange and give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Heading to the bottom of the 6th, Perucki had allowed just four baserunners all day. A lead off single by Assumption came around to score on a two-out single to tie the game at 1-1.

Perucki continued to help her cause with a two-out double in the 7th, but Nicole Spinelli was retired for the last out of the inning. Assumption manufactured a run in their final at-bat to walk off with the 2-1 victory.

In the second game, Cestari picked up two more hits and also scored a run while Gabriella Festa was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Lange also scored in this game. Owls starter Ashley Lewis threw four solid innings, giving up one run before Madison Prior came in for the Owls.

Assumption scored once in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 7th, trailing 2-0, the Owls mounted a comeback. Cestari hit a one-out double to left center for her fourth hit of the series before Lange worked a walk. Austin grounded out to short for the second out, but moved both runners into scoring position. Festa then ripped a double to center field to score both runs and tie the game, 2-2. Assumption scored on a walk-off in the bottom of the 7th in the second game as well.

Southern is set to host New Haven for a NE10 doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at Pelz Field.
