SCSU Baseball's Season Comes To End With Losses To Pace

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball's season came to an end with a pair of losses against Pace, 6-2 and 5-4 in 10 Innings. Southern's year ends with an overall record of 25-22 while Pace improved to 27-17 on the year.

In the first game, Billy Sullivan was 3-for-4 with a double while Izaiah Walker was 2-for-3 with his team-leading fourth home run while Mike Talavera had a double and Jake Gruttadauria scored the Owls' other run. On the mound, John Bucci pitched 2 1/3 scoreless, one-hit innings in the final collegiate game of his career.

In the second game, the Owls saw their season slip away with a Pace home run in the top of the 10th inning in a 5-4 loss. Jagger Duquette was perfect through the game's first three innings before exiting the game after allowing four runs on four hits over six innings of work with six strikeouts. Braeden Sparaco took the loss in relief after giving up one run over 3 1/3 before Spencer Fox pitched the final 2/3 of an inning in relief of Sparaco who exited with an injury.

Southern got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Gruttadauria reached on a single before Jagello bunted him over but reached for a hit before Patrick Dillon also had a bunt single to load the bases. Sullivan hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Gruttadauria to score and give Southern a 1-0 lead. Pace tied the game in the top of the 4th, 1-1.

In the bottom of the 4th, Walked singled to right field and then went to third on a failed pickoff. Devin Pelletier's ground ball to second forced Walker home to give Southern a 2-1 lead. In the 5th, Pace got three runs back on a three-run homer by Dominic Rivara to take a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, Derrick Jagello and Dillon walked to start the inning before Chad Fedeli was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a pitching change, Sullivan smoked a ball up the middle that was caught on a line behind the bag before it was flipped to second to double-up Dillon and turn a no-out, bases loaded situation into a two-out, runners-on-the-corners scenario. Jack Drewry played the hero with a double to deep right-center that scored Jagello and Fedeli and tied the game at 4-4.

Sparaco meanwhile retired all but one batter – who reached on an error – in the 8th and 9th innings to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, it was Rivara again going deep, this time a solo shot to left that just cleared the fence, to give Pace a 5-4 lead. Drewry singled with one out in the bottom of the 10th, but Pace retired the final two batters to get out of the jam and seal the win. Drewry was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the loss.
