SCSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Pace

PLESANTVILLE, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut baseball split a doubleheader against Pace, dropping game one 16-5 before winning game two 4-2. The Owls move to 11-23 on the season and 7-17 in conference play.

Jake Chacho helped elevate the Owls to a win in game two, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Bailey Goss earned his first win of the season and of his Owls' career, throwing a seven-inning complete game and striking out five batters.

GAME 1

In game one, the Owls were unable to recover from a large early deficit, dropping a 16–5 decision. Despite the loss, the Owls finished with 11 hits. Nick Karras led the way with three hits, while Alex Cappellucci tripled and scored. Aidan Hyams crossed the plate twice, and A.J. Martinez added a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning. Ryan Balzano also drove in a run late.

After a scoreless first inning, Pace broke the game open with five runs in the second and added another in the third against Owls' starter Payton Powell. Southern Connecticut got on the board in the fifth inning when Spencer Chard drove in a run on a fielder's choice, but the lead quickly grew as five more runs came across in the bottom half of the inning. The Owls showed some life in the sixth, scoring twice behind an RBI groundout from Matt Scalia and an RBI single by Ryan Fedeli, but another five-run inning put the game out of reach.

GAME 2

Southern Connecticut responded in game two with a much cleaner effort, earning a 4–2 victory to split the twin bill. Jake Chacho paced the offense with a multi-hit effort and two runs scored, including a solo home run. Devin Pelletier recorded two hits, including a double. Brennan Staubley and Zaid Vohra also recorded singles.

On the mound, Bailey Goss delivered a complete-game performance, allowing just two runs and striking out five batters over seven innings.

The Owls jumped out early in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning to set the tone. Chacho extended the lead with his home run in the third, and Southern Connecticut added another run in the fifth to build a cushion. From there, Goss controlled the game, shutting down any comeback attempt and securing the victory.

The Owls and the Setters will complete the four-game series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
