Karras, Vohra and Chard Power SCSU Baseball to Win over AIC, 11-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut baseball defeated American International 11-1, sweeping the season series. The Owls improve to 12-25 on the season and 8-19 in NE10 play.

Nick Karras accounted for the majority of the Owls' runs, going 3-for-6 with 5 RBI and a run scored. Zaid Vohra also had a phenomenal day, going 1-for-1 with a home run, three walks, and two runs scored, also adding a sacrifice bunt. Jake Chacho roped his seventh homer of the year, and Devin Pelletier, Brennan Staubley, and Alex Cappellucci each recorded two walks. Every Owl reached base in the win.

Colin Blake got the start for Southern and was dominant, striking out five batters and allowing only two hits and one run over six innings of work, earning his second win of the season. Johnny O'Brien pitched well in relief, striking out three batters and allowing only two hits in three innings pitched, earning his second-career save. The Owls did not allow a walk to the Yellow Jackets.

The pitching on both sides was dominant to start the game, with both teams facing the minimum through the first two and a half innings. Zaid Vohra broke the scoreless tie with a deep home run to left field, his second of the year, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Colin Blake ran into some trouble in the top of the 5th inning after not allowing a base runner over the previous four. A double and a single drove in AIC's first run of the game, tying the score 1-1.

The Owls answered back in the bottom of the 5th, scoring three runs with RBI hits coming from Nick Karras, Bam Talavera, and Jake Chacho. The would add two more in the next inning when Karras drove in two more after a sacrifice bunt from Vohra, giving the Owls a 6-1.

Alex Cappellucci lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the 7th to extend the lead to six runs, and Karras would single later in the inning to drive in two more. A homer from Chacho and a ground ball from Matt Scalia would add two more insurance runs, and Johnny O'Brien shut the door, giving the Owls a 11-1 victory.

The Owls are back on the road this weekend for a four-game set against Franklin Pierce.
