SCSU Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut baseball dropped both games of their doubleheader against Pace, losing game one 9-3 and game two 15-7. The Owls drop to 11-25 on the season and 7-19 in Northeast 10 Conference Play. 

Matt Scalia led the way offensively for the Owls, going 4-for-8 over the two games with three runs scored and an RBI. Bam Talavera went 3-for-6 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored, and Devin Pelletier went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and two walks. 

GAME 1

Jaylen Cruz got the start on the mound and was knocked around, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks. In relief, Jake O'Connor settled things down, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out one.

Offensively for the Owls, Matt Scalia led the way going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Bam Talavera added an RBI double, while Alex Cappellucci and Jake Chacho each drove in a run. Nick Karras also chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

The Setters jumped out early, plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Pace added two more runs in the second inning, extending the lead to 8-0.

The Owls responded in the top of the third inning. After a leadoff single by Scalia and a base hit from Karras, Talavera drove in the first run with a double. Later in the inning, Chacho grounded out to bring home another run, cutting the deficit to 8-2.

Southern Connecticut added another run in the fourth inning. Devin Pelletier reached on a single and later came around to score on an RBI single from Cappellucci, making it an 8-3 game.

Pace added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 9-3.

The Owls were unable to generate any further offense over the final three innings, as Pace held on for the 9-3 victory. 

GAME 2

Peter Glidden got the start on the mound for the Owls, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing six runs on four hits while walking four. Cody Heselton followed with 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Kyle Stegina took the loss after surrendering six runs over 1.1 innings, while Wes Keayes closed out the game, allowing one run across 1.2 innings.

Offensively for the Owls, Bam Talavera led the way going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Devin Pelletier added a strong performance with a double and three RBIs, while Matt Scalia finished 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Aidan Hyams also contributed with two hits and two runs scored, and Zaid Vohra drove in a run as part of a 13-hit effort for Southern Connecticut.

The Owls jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Talavera led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Pelletier. Later in the inning, Jake Chacho scored on a sacrifice fly from Spencer Chard to give Southern Connecticut a 2-0 advantage.

Southern Connecticut added to its lead in the second inning. After a walk and a single put runners on, Pelletier delivered a two-RBI double to extend the lead to 4-1.

Pace answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning, but the Owls responded in the fourth when Chacho drove in Pelletier with an RBI single to make it 5-2.

After Pace scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead, the Owls answered back in the fifth inning. Scalia doubled home a run before Vohra followed with an RBI single, tying the game at 7-7.

The game remained tied until the sixth inning when Pace broke it open. A grand slam highlighted a five-run inning for the Setters, giving them a 12-7 lead. Pace added three more runs in the seventh inning to extend the advantage to 15-7.

The Owls return to action on Tuesday, April 21st to take on American International at home.
