SCSU Field Hockey Tops Franklin Pierce, 3-1, In Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut field hockey defeated Franklin Pierce, 3-1, in a non-conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improved to 2-3 overall while Franklin Pierce dropped to 0-5 on the season.

Owls senior standout Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti had a pair of assists for her first points of the season while Keana Criscuolo and Kate Salvador both scored their first goals of the season. Natalia Fiato also scored her first goal of the season to help the Owls to the two-goal win. In goal, Rachel Miller stopped six of Franklin Pierce's seven shots on goal.

The game was scoreless through the first half before Criscuolo broke through midway through the third quarter. Rodriguez Ricchiuti made a brilliant pass through traffic that found the freshman's stick for her first career goal. Less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, it was Rodriguez Ricchiuti with another incredible pass as she blasted the ball through a cluster of players in front of the Ravens' goal to Salvador's stick. Salvador then one-touched it past Franklin Pierce's goalkeeper to give Southern a 2-0 lead.

Fiato made it 3-0 off a corner set that saw Rodriguez Ricchiuti insert the ball to stick-stop Ruby Webb. Taylor Leckey then sent a pass to Fiato on the wing who made a move to step around the defender and sent a rocket on goal to give Southern the three-goal lead.

Franklin Pierce broke through less than a minute later when Rebecca Phillips was awarded a penalty stroke which she was able to convert on.

Southern is back in action when it hosts American International for its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
