SCSU Volleyball Sweeps Caldwell, 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut volleyball swept Caldwell, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-16) in a non-conference matchup at Pelz Gymnasium. With the win, Southern improved to 2-11 for the year while Caldwell dropped to 0-9.

Raegen Emery led the Owls with 12 kills while hitting .409 and also registered eight digs, a block and an ace. Victoria Pascual had six kills and a career-best six aces while Sarah Stark led the Owls with seven blocks (2 solo, five assisted), teaming with Julia Jaworowski on the front line to dominate against the Caldwell attack. Jaworowski had four assisted blocks and also had four kills. Sydney Bennett had four kills with a season-best hitting percentage of .571. Madi Roar had 18 assists while Lily Miller added eight.

In the first set, both teams played back-and-forth and stood at 9-9. Caldwell scored four of the next five points to take a 13-10 lead before the Owls came back to tie it at 15-15. Southern regained the lead, 19-17, after kills from Katie Bardak and Isabel Alvarez before the Owls took advantage of several Caldwell errors to take a 23-20 lead. Emery finished the Cougars off with back-to-back kills.

The Owls opened the second set on a 6-2 run, keyed by a kill and ace from Pascual, with Jaworowski adding another kill to give the Owls a four-point lead. Caldwell used an 11-1 run to take a 13-7 lead with Wyette Schubert-Brown recording six-straight kills. Southern bounced back with eight straight points to take a 15-13 lead, and then pushed its lead to 18-14 on back-to-back kills by Pascual and Jaworowski. Stark added a kill, followed by two from Emery, an error on Caldwell and then another ace from Pascual as the Owls took a 23-15 lead. After a service error, the Owls won the ball back and ended the second set on a Emily Sartell ace.

Southern used a pair of aces from Pascual and two kills from Jaworowski to take a 7-2 lead to open the third set. Leading 17-12, Caldwell took two points before Pascual keyed another Southern run with a kill and two aces followed by an Emery kill to give the Owls a 21-13 lead. The Owls closed the third set on kills by Emery and Bennett with a Miller ace sandwiched in the middle.

Southern has a quick turnaround with another non-conference matchup against Chestnut Hill on Monday, Sept. 30 at Pelz Gym at 5 p.m.
