Jose Clemente's Hat Trick Leads Owls To Season-Opening 3-0 Win Against Bloomfield

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's soccer opened the season with a 3-0 win at home against Bloomfield at Jess Dow Field. Jose Clemente provided the offense for the Owls as he recorded Southern's first hat trick since 2022.

Edward Mensah picked up his first point as an Owl with an assist on Clemente's first goal. Kasper Murzinski and Zico Groenveld also had assists for Southern. In goal, Devin Juan stopped the Bears' only shot for the shutout.

Clemente's first goal as an Owl came in less than three minutes. Off a corner, Mensah took control of the ball on the near-side post, spun from the defense and then bicycle-kicked the ball over his head to Clemente on the opposite post.

Midway through the second half, Murzinski carried the ball into the box and centered a pass to Groeneveld. Groeneveld then touched it to Clemente who slid a shot past the keeper to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, Clemente picked up a rebound off a broken play in the box and punched a shot past the Bears goalkeeper to cap the scoring for the day.
Southern is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 8 when it travels to Bridgeport, Conn. to take on University of Bridgeport at 6 p.m.
