SCSU Football Falls To Delaware State

DOVER, Dela. – Southern Connecticut football lost to Delaware State, 70-23, in a non-conference matchup played in Dover, Dela. Southern dropped to 1-4 with the loss against the NCAA Division I FCS program while the Hornets improved to 4-3 overall.

Kieran Falzon carried the ball 25 times for 101 yards and also added his fifth touchdown of the season. Falzon also returned one kick for 17 yards. John Giller was 16-for-28 for 244 yards and two touchdowns under center. Divine Edwards led the Owls with six catches for 93 yards and a touchdown while Seth Westover had a 73-yard touchdown catch as part of a three-catch, 85-yard day.

On defense, Cooper Dayton and Dom Barbuto both had five tackles, each while TJ Butler had two tackles and forced a fumble. Andreas Picarelli punted the ball eight times for 354 yards and averaged 44.2 yards per punt. Picarelli had two punts over 50 yards, two inside the 20 and three touchbacks.



Southern got on board early in the second quarter when DSU was flagged for a 15-yard penalty before Branden Louis stopped a run for a loss and backed the Hornets up to their 10-yard line. The ensuing snap on the punt sailed out of the end zone for a safety.

On the Owls' next possession, Giller found Westover over the middle, setting up the senior receiver to split a pair of defensive backs and take it 73 yards for his team-leading third touchdown catch of the season.

Midway through the third quarter, the Owls started on their own 21-yard line and opened with a 13-yard run by Falzon. Giller then connected with Edwards on a 16-yard reception and later on a 15-yard catch to move the Owls to the Hornet's 23-yard line. Following a Falzon run to the 20, Giller faked a handoff to Falzon and then found Edwards in the flat for a 20-yard touchdown.

At the start of the fourth, Giller found Edwards for 14 yards and Westover for eight yards to move the Owls to DSU's 15-yard line. Falzon then pounded through an open hole for 10 yards before finishing the drive with a four-yard touchdown run for his fifth score of the season.

Southern is back in action with a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Pace on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. Southern returns home to host Saint Anselm on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
